Unity canceled its proposed per-install Runtime Fee for games on September 12, 2024. Unity’s current FAQ says the fee will not apply to games made with Unity 6 or any other Unity version—and that no Unity game has been or will be subject to it. Unity returned gaming customers to seat-based subscriptions, which remain separate from the canceled fee and may still involve costs that depend on plan eligibility and current pricing.
What happened to Unity’s Runtime Fee?
Unity President and CEO Matthew Bromberg announced the cancellation on September 12, 2024, following consultation with developers, customers, and partners. The change applied to game customers; Unity said non-gaming Industry customers were not affected by this modification. The company described the gaming model as returning to seat-based subscriptions, including for customers adopting Unity 6. Unity’s announcement said the Personal plan’s revenue and funding ceiling would double from $100,000 to $200,000.
Unity’s current pricing FAQ says the Runtime Fee was canceled effective immediately, will not apply to any Unity version, and never applied to any new or existing Unity game. So developers do not owe Unity the proposed per-install charge for games made with Unity.
What replaced the proposed per-install charge?
Unity did not replace the Runtime Fee with another install-based charge. It said gaming customers would return to a seat-based subscription model: payment is tied to subscription seats rather than a game’s installations. That does not mean Unity is free for every developer or that subscriptions have no other conditions. Plan eligibility, revenue and funding thresholds, and subscription prices are separate matters.

In its October 10, 2024 terms update, Unity listed these annual revenue and funding ranges: Personal at $0–$200,000, Pro at $200,001–$24,999,999, and Enterprise at $25,000,000 or more. Those are the thresholds stated in that 2024 update, not a substitute for checking current eligibility terms.
Unity said the October terms update covered Editor users on Personal, Pro, Enterprise, and Industry plans across Editor versions. Users could continue using a named Editor version under terms they had already accepted, while Unity 6 required acceptance of the updated terms. Review the current terms and pricing directly before making a licensing or budgeting decision.

Do Unity subscriptions still cost money?
Yes, subscription pricing is a separate issue from the canceled Runtime Fee. Unity’s pricing page documents later subscription changes, including a 5% price increase for Pro and Enterprise effective January 12, 2026. That increase is not a per-install charge. Because plan prices and eligibility can change, check Unity’s live pricing page for current costs and conditions.

The original proposal would have tied a charge to game installations after specified revenue and download thresholds. Developers raised concerns that installations might come from sales, charity bundles, or subscription services, making the resulting cost harder to predict. Contemporary Axios reporting described studios worrying about business stability and developers discussing delays or switching engines. Those reports document examples of the 2023 backlash; they do not establish that every developer objected or that developers broadly migrated to other engines.

In explaining the reversal, Bromberg wrote that Unity could not pursue its mission “in conflict with our customers” and said the relationship had to be “a partnership built on trust.” He said customers understood that price increases could be necessary but objected to the proposed form of the change. These were the CEO’s comments in his September 12, 2024 announcement.
On Unity’s November 7, 2024 Q3 earnings call, Bromberg said the canceled pricing structure had discouraged some customers from upgrading to Unity 6. He described customers telling him that they had instructed teams not to upgrade before the reversal, then reconsidered afterward. He also reported more than 500,000 Unity 6 downloads at that point. That is a company-reported figure from November 2024, not a current download count or an independent measure of adoption.

What to check before budgeting a Unity project
- Confirm the Runtime Fee status: Unity’s current FAQ says the canceled fee does not apply to games made with any Unity version.
- Check your plan and eligibility: Use Unity’s current terms rather than assuming the October 2024 thresholds still describe every detail.
- Budget subscriptions separately: Seat-based subscription costs and price changes are distinct from the Runtime Fee.
- Verify before upgrading or signing: Unity said Unity 6 users must accept updated terms; review the terms that apply to your Editor version and plan.
