Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. Luigi Mangione later pleaded guilty to two federal stalking counts resulting in death; sentencing was scheduled for December 18, 2026, while a separate New York state case had a partial evidence-suppression ruling.
What happened to Brian Thompson?
Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan at approximately 6:45 a.m. on December 4, 2024. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
The detail that the shooting was planned and targeted came from investigators’ and prosecutors’ accounts, not from a court finding in the initial charging announcements. The Manhattan District Attorney’s December 17, 2024 announcement described events around the hotel and shooting based on court documents and statements on the record. The Justice Department’s December 19 federal charging release separately outlined the government’s allegations about planning and surveillance.
How the case developed
| Date | What happened | Procedural context |
|---|---|---|
| December 4, 2024 | Thompson was shot outside the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan. The District Attorney’s Office reported he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m. | The shooting and time of death are from the Manhattan District Attorney’s account. |
| December 9, 2024 | Police arrested Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after an employee recognized him and called police. | New York City officials referred to him at the time as a “person of interest,” not as someone convicted of a crime. |
| December 17, 2024 | The Manhattan District Attorney announced a state grand jury indictment on murder and weapons charges. | An indictment is an accusation; it is not itself a finding of guilt. |
| December 19, 2024 | The Justice Department announced federal charges and described alleged planning and surveillance. | Those details were allegations in the federal charging release. |
| May 18, 2026 | New York Supreme Court, New York County, ruled on defense suppression motions after hearings in December 2025. | The court granted the motion in part and denied it in part. |
| August 14, 2026 | The U.S. Attorney’s Office reported that Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal stalking counts resulting in death. | Sentencing was scheduled for December 18, 2026. |
What was alleged, and what did Mangione plead guilty to?
The 2024 state and federal charging announcements set out prosecutors’ theory that the shooting was targeted and planned. The federal account said Mangione traveled to New York, conducted reconnaissance around the hotel and conference venue, and shot Thompson. These descriptions should be understood as the government’s allegations at the charging stage.

The later federal guilty plea changes the procedural status of the federal case: the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Mangione admitted to interstate stalking resulting in death and cyberstalking through interstate facilities resulting in death. The office’s August 14, 2026 release also described him as having admitted to stalking and murdering Thompson. The release recited additional investigative facts as alleged in the indictment and public filings; that does not make every such detail a separate finding at sentencing.
The two federal counts are stalking offenses resulting in death. The plea should not be described as a federal murder conviction. The federal sentencing remained pending as of October 8, 2026.
What does the New York state-court ruling mean?
The May 18, 2026 decision followed hearings in December 2025 at which the court heard testimony from 17 witnesses. It granted the defense suppression motion in part and denied it in part. The decision discusses the Altoona arrest and search of Mangione’s backpack.
This was a pretrial ruling about whether some evidence could be suppressed, not a verdict on the state charges. The ruling alone does not establish the final effect on the prosecution, and the official materials available for this account do not establish the state case’s ultimate outcome.

Officials’ descriptions changed as the case moved through different stages. On December 9, 2024, the NYPD commissioner called Mangione a “person of interest.” The state indictment and federal charges followed later that month; the federal guilty plea was reported in August 2026. Keeping those stages distinct avoids treating an early investigative label, a prosecutor’s allegation, a court’s pretrial evidence ruling, and a guilty plea as interchangeable.
