The rumors trace back to February 2025, when a Denver flight-training campus project raised questions about whether office space there could eventually hold corporate staff. United said the land was for flight training and that no office move was imminent. Nothing published since then establishes a decided move out of Chicago.
What set off the February 2025 rumors
On February 12, 2025, Axios Chicago reported that newly approved development plans had prompted speculation that United might move its headquarters from Chicago to Denver. The project at the center of the story was a United flight-simulator campus on 113 acres near Denver International Airport. According to Axios’s reporting, the plans left room for office buildings that could house more than 6,000 employees. Axios also noted that about 5,000 United employees worked at Willis Tower at the time.
Those capacity figures describe what the plans could physically accommodate. They are not a count of planned transfers, and they do not show that any corporate team was scheduled to move.
What United has said
United’s response, as quoted in the same Axios Chicago report, was that the land was for flight training and that no office move was “imminent.” A spokesperson also said:

- “We have been here in Chicago for decades and have thousands of employees here.”
The first line leaves room for flexibility without committing to anything. The second is a statement about the present footprint. Neither is an announcement of a relocation. The “not imminent” language is time-specific: it reflects what United said in February 2025, not a permanent pledge to stay in Chicago.
What the 2026 evidence shows
Later public materials keep Chicago at the center of United’s operations, though they do not settle where its headquarters will be in the long term.

Regulatory filings
A February 2026 SEC filing gives a Chicago address for the principal executive offices of both United Airlines Holdings, Inc. and United Airlines, Inc. This is a useful check for any future change: a company that moves its headquarters will normally show a new principal executive office address in its SEC filings. As of this review, no such change appears in the material examined.
Investor-relations and hub listings
United’s investor-relations page lists Chicago and Denver among its seven U.S. hub cities. A hub is an operational base where flights connect. It is not the same as a corporate headquarters, and the presence of a hub in Denver says nothing about where executives or corporate staff sit.

Chicago growth signals
In a September 30, 2026 interview covered by Axios, CEO Scott Kirby described a vision for Chicago:
“I have a vision … not just for United, but for the city of Chicago … we’ll be a thousand flights a day in Chicago, we’ll have another 15 international destinations,”

Axios reported that United was then operating roughly 650 daily departures from O’Hare. United’s careers page, accessed October 8, 2026, advertised O’Hare growth and displayed 750 daily flights starting in May 2026. United’s corporate impact page refers to Chicago as the city it calls home and describes 2025 engagement across its headquarters, its Network Operations Center, and its airport. These are company statements about planned operations. They are not a headquarters decision, but they point toward continued Chicago investment.
The 2019 Willis Tower decision
In 2019, United announced that its headquarters would remain at Willis Tower while it extended its lease and invested in its workspace. That announcement is historical context. The reporting reviewed does not include more recent lease terms, so the 2019 arrangement should not be treated as a current description of the lease.

Comparing the Denver and Chicago footprints
The clearest way to read the story is to compare what each location is used for, rather than treating a single facility as a headquarters signal.

What this means for your money
If you work for United or live near either campus, a headquarters decision would matter to you in concrete ways: commute, housing, and whether your job stays where it is. None of that is established by the current reporting. No transfer offer, relocation package, or layoff tied to a headquarters move has been reported. No independent estimate of the economic impact of a possible move has been published, so any dollar figure you see attached to this story is speculation.
For shareholders, the reporting reviewed does not connect headquarters location to any financial outcome. Investment decisions should rest on United’s financial results and filings, not on the location of an office building.
What to watch if you want to know sooner
- Cover pages of SEC filings. A change in principal executive office address appears on the cover page of annual and quarterly reports.
- Official company announcements. A headquarters decision would be made public by United, not inferred from land purchases or building plans.
- Lease and workspace disclosures. Changes to the Willis Tower lease or new office leases in Denver would be the most direct evidence of a shift in corporate staffing.
- Employee-facing messages and job postings. Corporate role postings or relocation notices in a given city can signal where teams are being placed, though they are not a formal decision on their own.
Because the February 2025 statements are time-specific and the most recent company statements focus on Chicago operations, the reasonable reading today is that United has not decided to leave Chicago, and that a future decision would appear first in official filings or company announcements.
