The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) says it delivers an average 31% increase in base pay and $741 million in retroactive pay, alongside boarding pay, sit pay and work-rule changes. Those are union-reported summary figures—not a guarantee that every flight attendant receives the same raise or payout.
What the ratified contract changes
AFA’s March 26, 2026, announcement of a second tentative agreement described improved base-pay rates, boarding pay, sit pay for scheduled and rescheduled sits over 2.5 hours, restrictions on red-eye flying, and improved hotel and electronic-notification language. For personal budgeting, distinguish the package’s main components: base wages are future hourly pay under the contract, while retroactive pay covers eligible past work under the agreement’s formula. Boarding and sit pay are additional compensation tied to specified work conditions. The announcements do not provide the detailed rates, eligibility rules or retroactive-pay calculation.
What the union’s headline figures mean
AFA reported an average base-pay increase of 31% and a $741 million retroactive-pay payout. The union also reported that 88.85% of eligible members participated in the ratification vote and 82% voted yes. An average increase does not establish that each flight attendant’s rate rises by 31%. An individual’s outcome depends on the contract’s wage schedule and applicable employment details. Likewise, the $741 million figure is an aggregate reported payout, not the amount owed to each member. To estimate an individual’s pay, consult the contract’s rates, eligibility provisions and implementation guidance.
Where to find exact rates and payment rules
AFA’s Joint Implementation Team published the 2026–2031 collective bargaining agreement on September 24, 2026. It is the appropriate source for wage rates by seniority, effective dates, retroactive-pay eligibility and implementation details. AFA also directed members to education resources and calculators for boarding pay, sit pay and retroactive pay. Use those resources alongside the contract rather than treating the announcement’s averages as an individual estimate. AFA’s TA2 member resources.
How the agreement reached ratification
The March 2026 deal was a second tentative agreement, not the first proposal in the bargaining process. AFA’s August 2025 debrief said a member survey was intended to determine why the prior tentative agreement had not ratified. Does “top of industry” establish the best overall pay?
The union’s reported average raise and payout do not, by themselves, establish that United’s total compensation exceeds every competitor’s. A meaningful comparison would require comparable current contracts and would account for base rates by seniority, boarding and other ground-time compensation, sit or delay pay, retroactive-pay treatment, work rules, eligibility and contract dates. The available United announcements do not provide a comparable cross-airline dataset or enough detail to rank workers’ total compensation.
