What you can bring—and what you may pay—depends on your exact fare, route, travel date, and qualifying traveler benefits. Check the current rules for your itinerary before packing or buying a bag, and use United’s checked-bag fee calculator for an estimate or a booked-flight lookup.
What baggage can you bring on United Economy?
Separate your baggage into three categories: an under-seat personal item, an overhead-bin carry-on, and checked baggage. Whether a fare includes a particular bag—and whether a checked bag costs extra—depends on more than the word “Economy” on your ticket.

Personal item and carry-on
A secondary size reference, last verified July 2, 2026, reports a United carry-on limit of 22 × 14 × 9 inches (56 × 35 × 22 cm) and a personal-item limit of 17 × 10 × 9 inches (43 × 25 × 22 cm). It says carry-on measurements include handles and wheels. These are secondary-reported dimensions, not confirmation of United’s current official policy; verify the applicable limits with United before relying on them.

United’s calculator lists both as Economy cabin choices, but that does not mean each fare includes the same cabin baggage. Check the rules for your specific ticket and route. A bag that fits a size limit does not change what your fare allows.

Checked bags
United’s calculator gives itinerary-specific checked-bag fee estimates. Its page associates the cited estimates with a maximum outside linear dimension of 62 inches (157 cm). Treat that as the threshold stated with the calculator’s estimates, not a complete baggage rule for every fare and market. United also notes that allowances may change and that some markets limit checked bags.
How to find your checked-bag fee
- Open United’s checked-bag fee calculator.
- Look up your planned flight or enter your booked itinerary, as appropriate.
- Select the cabin and fare details that match your ticket. The calculator treats Economy and Basic Economy as Economy cabin choices.
- Review the estimate for your itinerary and traveler circumstances. Status or other qualifying circumstances may affect the charge.
Use the result for the trip you are actually taking rather than assuming a general price applies. The fee calculator is an estimate tool; check the itinerary details and current United guidance before payment or departure.

Why a reported checked-bag price may not match your trip
United’s checked-bag charges depend on itinerary and traveler circumstances, and the airline says allowances can change. A price reported for a particular region or date is not necessarily the price for a different route, fare, or traveler.

For context, the Associated Press reported on April 3, 2026, that United raised checked-bag fees effective in April 2026. The report gave prices of $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second on flights within the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America, and noted that some travelers were exempt. Those are dated, geographically qualified reported prices—not a universal quote. Check United’s calculator for your own itinerary.

What to check before choosing a bag or fare
- Fare: Confirm whether your ticket is standard Economy or Basic Economy and which cabin bags it permits.
- Trip: Use the route, destination market, and travel date for the flight you plan to take; check whether you are pricing a prospective or already-booked itinerary.
- Traveler benefits: Enter or account for status and other qualifying circumstances that may change checked-bag charges.
- Bag placement and size: Distinguish an under-seat item from an overhead carry-on, and confirm current size limits with United.
- Aircraft constraints: The FAA notes that overhead-bin space can be limited on some aircraft. If you need special accommodation for baggage, check with the airline.
A carry-on suitcase or personal-item bag can help you stay within the applicable size limit, but buying a bag cannot add an allowance that your ticket does not include.
