Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), a major United hub, warned travelers to expect potentially longer TSA lines during Spring Break 2026. The airport’s warning and United’s flight disruptions were reported in connection with the same weekend, but available official information does not establish that screening delays caused the airline’s disruptions or verify how many flights were affected. Travelers should check current checkpoint waits and United flight status before heading to the airport.
What the TSA warning at Houston Bush Airport said
For the March 5–16, 2026 Spring Break period, Houston Airports forecast about 2.2 million travelers across George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU), 3% more than the previous year. The forecast identified March 6, 8, 12, and 15 as the busiest days, with 184,000 to 185,000 travelers projected across the airports on each of those days. These were projections, not actual passenger counts. Houston Airports’ Spring Break announcement explains the forecast.
The airport warned that TSA waits could be longer than normal because of the government shutdown and increased passenger volume. It advised travelers to arrive early, check real-time TSA wait times, and reserve parking. The forecast covers both Houston airports; it is not an IAH-only passenger estimate. Are TSA lines at IAH long?
They can be, but waits vary by checkpoint, screening lane, staffing, and time of day. Houston Airports says TSA staffing levels fluctuate and PreCheck or CLEAR availability may change day to day. The airport also describes Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday as generally busier than Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Those patterns are guidance, not a prediction for a specific flight or checkpoint. Check IAH security updates for current airport information.

United says its mobile app shows estimated wait times for standard security screening and TSA PreCheck at its U.S. hubs, including Houston. These are estimates and may not match the actual wait. Compare the estimate for your screening lane with airport guidance, and allow extra time if conditions are uncertain. See United’s announcement about app wait-time estimates.
Does the TSA warning explain United’s flight disruptions?
No causal connection is established. The TSA warning concerns airport security waits; it does not show that security lines caused United’s flight disruptions. The available accessible information also does not verify a count of United flights affected during the weekend referenced in the headline. Treat the disruption report and the TSA warning as separate developments unless United or the airport provides evidence linking them.

What travelers should do before leaving for IAH
- Check the current IAH security guidance and checkpoint waits before setting out. Conditions can change, and a general busy-day pattern does not determine the line at your checkpoint.
- Check your flight’s status in United’s app or through United’s flight-status service. A security-wait estimate is not a flight-status update.
- Leave extra time for screening, especially during a busy travel period or when staffing and lane availability are changing. Houston Airports advised travelers to arrive early but did not specify a single required arrival buffer.
- If your flight is delayed or canceled, use United’s app or self-service options to review rebooking choices. United says eligible customers may receive meal or hotel vouchers; eligibility and availability depend on the circumstances.
For airport and flight updates, use Houston Airports’ IAH security page and United’s app guidance, then confirm your itinerary directly with United.
