In October 2024, BOC Aviation announced a lease agreement covering four aircraft already flying with United Airlines: three Boeing 737 MAX 9s and one Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The aircraft were not new deliveries. They were existing members of United’s operating fleet when the financing was announced, and the deal is a financing and asset-placement transaction, not a fleet expansion.
What the agreement covered
BOC Aviation, a Singapore-based aircraft lessor, announced the agreement on October 7, 2024. That date is the announcement date reported by AeroTime; it is not necessarily the date the contracts were signed. The aircraft mix was:
| Aircraft | Quantity | Reported engine | Status at announcement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boeing 737 MAX 9 | 3 | CFM LEAP-1B | Already in United’s operating fleet |
| Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner | 1 | GE GEnx | Already in United’s operating fleet |
Two points in that table matter for reading the headline correctly. First, the deal names specific variants: MAX 9 rather than a generic 737, and the 787-9 rather than an unspecified 787. Second, the aircraft were already flying for United. Coverage of the deal, including AeroTime’s report, does not describe them as future deliveries.
What BOC Aviation said about it
AeroTime attributes the following statement to Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BOC Aviation: “The financing of these four latest generation Boeing aircraft provides us with an incremental investment opportunity as we continue to grow our business.”

The same report quotes Townend describing the arrangement as support for United’s fleet renewal: “We are delighted to be supporting our long-time customer, United, once again, as it continues its fleet renewal programme.”
Those statements tell you what the lessor wanted to say about the deal: that it is an investment for the lessor and a financing arrangement for a long-standing customer. They do not disclose the economics. Coverage I could confirm does not establish the lease term, rental rate, purchase price, or individual aircraft registrations.

Sale-and-leaseback: a possibility, not a confirmed term
Aviation A2Z, which published a same-day report with the same aircraft mix and quote, suggested the transaction could be a sale-and-leaseback. Its reasoning rests on the aircraft already being in service and on the investment framing. The same report says this was not explicitly confirmed.
In a sale-and-leaseback, an airline sells aircraft it owns to a lessor and then leases them back, raising cash while keeping the aircraft in service. That structure would fit the facts reported so far, but it is an inference. Readers should treat it as a possible explanation, not as a term of this deal.

Why a personal-finance reader might care
This is a story about the aircraft financing market, not about what a traveler pays. The reporting does not describe a route change, fare change, or cabin change for passengers. For most readers, the useful takeaway is how large operators finance expensive equipment:
- Airlines often keep aircraft on their books while lessors fund them, which spreads the capital cost across time rather than paying it upfront.
- Lessors treat leases as long-term investments with contracted payments, which is why they describe deals like this as “investment opportunities.”
- Financing already-operating aircraft is a different risk profile from financing new deliveries, since the asset’s performance is already visible.
Those are general principles of aircraft finance. They are not drawn from the terms of this specific agreement, which were not disclosed in the coverage available.

What is established and what is not
- Established: BOC Aviation announced the agreement on October 7, 2024, covering three 737 MAX 9s and one 787-9, all already in United’s fleet, with the engine types listed above.
- Not established: the lease length, payment amounts, purchase prices, aircraft registrations, or whether the deal is a sale-and-leaseback.
- Not established from the coverage I could review: whether the arrangement is still in effect or has changed since 2024. The reporting is a snapshot of the announcement, and readers should check current aircraft records or the lessor’s and airline’s later disclosures for any status update.
The headline’s “lease deal” wording matches the report’s headline. The report’s body uses “lease agreement,” which is the more accurate description of what was announced.
