United Airlines scheduled the first flight of its new Elevated Boeing 787-9 from San Francisco for April 22, 2026, as flight UA1 to Singapore. The headline’s “next month” reflects a March 2026 announcement. As of October 8, 2026, that date has passed, so this article treats the launch as a dated schedule. United’s announcements confirm the schedule and ticket sales. They do not, on their own, confirm that the flight operated as planned, so check United’s flight status or newsroom for the operational record.
Why this 787-9 is different
United unveiled its Elevated interior for the Boeing 787-9 on May 13, 2025. It is a nose-to-tail cabin redesign. At that point United expected to take delivery of the first aircraft before the end of 2025 and to start international flights in 2026 from San Francisco to Singapore and London. By March 2026, United said the first three aircraft had been delivered with the new interior.
United calls the cabin premium-heavy because it puts 99 seats in its premium classes (Polaris Studio, Polaris and Premium Plus) in the original configuration. The difference is easiest to see against the layout it replaces.
Seat counts before and after
The table below uses United’s published seat counts. The totals and premium share are our arithmetic from those counts, not figures United published separately.

|---|---|---|---|
| Polaris Studio | Not listed in the earlier counts | 8 | 8 |

On these counts, premium seats rise from about 27% of the cabin (69 of 257) to about 45% (99 of 222). The total seat count falls by 35. The original configuration and the debut aircraft both total 222 seats, but the debut aircraft moves 6 seats from Economy to Economy Plus. The earlier column describes United’s then-current 787-9 layout. It does not guarantee the cabin of every older aircraft.

What travelers should check
- Confirm the aircraft type and seat map on your booking. The counts above apply to the debut aircraft named in United’s announcements. Other 787-9s may have a different layout.
- Plan your own headphones. United says Bluetooth is available at every seat. Its announcement does not establish compatibility with any particular headphone model, so check your headphones’ Bluetooth specifications.
- Decide whether privacy matters. Only the eight Polaris Studio seats have a privacy door. Premium Plus has privacy dividers instead.
- Compare fares directly. The announcements point customers to United.com and the United app. They do not include fare levels, so check current prices there before deciding whether a premium cabin is worth the cost.
