Financial coaching can help you turn a personal money goal into a concrete plan, take manageable steps, and review your progress with ongoing support. A coach works with you rather than taking control of your decisions; what you focus on and how you measure progress should fit your circumstances.

What does a financial coach do?

A financial coach helps you clarify what you want to change, decide on practical next steps, and stay engaged with the plan over time. The work is collaborative and customized: a coach can ask questions, help you identify obstacles, and support you as you adapt your approach. Programs differ according to clients’ needs and the capacity of the coach or organization.

Coaching is different from handing someone authority over your money. You remain responsible for your choices. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes coaching as goal-oriented support tailored to the person receiving it.

What can financial coaching help you work on?

Your goal does not have to be a particular account balance. The CFPB’s framework for evaluating coaching includes planning and goals, savings, bill payment, credit profile, and financial well-being. Depending on what matters to you, a goal might involve making a plan, following it, or reaching a defined outcome.

What does the evidence say about results?

A CFPB-commissioned randomized evaluation of two coaching programs serving low- and moderate-income consumers found measurable gains in money management, objective financial-health measures, and participants’ confidence and reported well-being among people offered access to coaching. That is encouraging evidence, but it does not show that every coach, program, or client will get the same results.

In its 2015 account of the evaluation, the CFPB reported average results that included almost $1,200 more in savings in New York City, over $10,000 less debt in Miami, and a 21-point increase in credit scores in New York City. These figures describe results from particular evaluated programs and locations; they are historical study findings, not typical-results estimates or promises for an individual client.

How to turn a goal into a coaching plan

  1. Name the goal that matters to you. Be specific about what you want to change and why it matters in your circumstances.
  2. Choose a concrete next action. Agree on a step you can take, rather than relying on a vague intention.
  3. Decide how to track follow-through. Pick an indicator that shows whether you took the action or made progress toward the goal.
  4. Review and adjust. Check in with your coach about what worked, what got in the way, and whether changing circumstances call for a revised plan.

Progress can mean having a plan, carrying it out, or achieving the goal. The CFPB’s evaluation framework tracks these planning outcomes alongside savings, bill payment, credit profile, and financial well-being; it does not prescribe one goal order for everyone.

How can you measure financial well-being?

A balance or credit score can tell you something about your finances, but neither directly captures the whole experience of feeling financially secure or having freedom of choice. The CFPB’s Financial Well-Being Scale offers a questionnaire and scoring method for measuring this aspect consistently and comparing scores over time. The agency provides standard and abbreviated questionnaires and scoring materials.

Is coaching, financial education, or self-guided planning right for you?

Approach Personalization and support May fit best when
Self-guided planning You set the goal and decide how to track it without a coach’s ongoing accountability. You know what you want to do and are comfortable organizing and reviewing your own steps.
Financial coaching Support is individualized and may include follow-up as you work toward your goals. You want help shaping a plan, working through obstacles, or staying accountable.
Financial education Primarily provides information; some educators may also incorporate coaching elements. You mainly need to understand a financial topic before deciding what action to take.

Cost and access can vary, so compare the actual services available to you rather than assuming one approach is always better. A coach may suit someone who needs support applying information, while a self-guided approach may be enough for someone who already has a clear plan.

How to evaluate a financial coach or program

Prices, credentials, and local availability are not established by the CFPB materials cited here. Ask providers directly before signing up, and compare the details that affect whether the service is suitable for you.

  • What relevant experience and training does the coach have?
  • What does the service include, and what is outside its scope?
  • How often do meetings take place, and are they in person, by phone, or online?
  • What are the total fees, including any charges beyond an initial session?
  • How will your information be handled and kept private?
  • Does the coach sell financial products or receive compensation for recommending them?

Ask for clear answers in writing when possible, especially about fees, privacy, and any product-related compensation.

What happened to the CFPB Financial Coaching Initiative?

The CFPB’s Financial Coaching Initiative is a historical example of a host-organization delivery model, not a current directory or a promise that free coaching is available in every community. In a 2021 account, the CFPB said the four-year initiative had served more than 23,000 consumers through 60 host sites. The initiative’s reported run ended in 2019; check with local organizations or providers to learn what services are currently available.
