United’s Palisades wildfire travel waivers covered specific trips in January 2025, but both notices have expired. The initial waiver applied to travel involving Burbank (BUR) or Los Angeles International (LAX) on January 7–9; a later extension covered additional Southern California airports and dates. The rules differed by notice, so the dates and conditions below should not be treated as current rebooking options.
What did United’s initial Palisades wildfire waiver cover?
United’s January 8, 2025 advisory covered passengers traveling to, from, or through Burbank (BUR) or Los Angeles International (LAX) on January 7–9, 2025. Tickets had to have been issued by January 6. Eligible passengers could change to a United or United Express flight departing January 7–15, 2025, without a change fee or fare difference, provided the replacement flight remained in the originally ticketed cabin and between the original cities. The advisory included waiver code 7JCU2 and agency-handling details. Those details do not mean that the code alone established eligibility or that every traveler needed to use an agency.
How did the later Southern California extension differ?
United’s January 11, 2025 “Southern California Wildfires – Extension II” notice changed the covered dates, airports, ticket deadline, and eligible itinerary cities. It was a separate notice, not a replacement set of terms to combine with the January 8 advisory.

United’s January 11 Extension II advisory described the expanded dates and eligible replacement itinerary cities. Its terms should be read independently from the initial notice.
Do the waivers still apply?
No. Both advisories concerned January 2025 travel and have expired. United’s Travel-Ready Center provides an official place to review trip requirements and restrictions, but its landing page does not establish that this wildfire waiver remains available. For a current disruption, check the reservation and United’s current travel information rather than relying on the historical dates or conditions above.

What was happening in Los Angeles during the fires?
A January 9, 2025 Los Angeles County smoke advisory said potential direct smoke impact from the Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires had caused unhealthy air quality in the county. That local air-quality context does not establish that any particular United flight was delayed or canceled. Los Angeles County’s smoke advisory quoted County Health Officer Muntu Davis, MD, MPH: “Predicting where ash or soot from a fire will travel, or how winds will impact air quality, is difficult, so it’s important for everyone to stay aware of the air quality in your area, make plans, and take action to protect yourself and your family’s health.”
