If the name on your United reservation doesn’t match the government-issued photo ID you will show at the airport, correct it before you travel. United states that traveler information in a booking must exactly match that ID to comply with TSA Secure Flight. Its public pages do not spell out which corrections it accepts, what paperwork it requires, or whether a fee applies, so the practical path is to locate the reservation, compare every character with your ID, and contact United or the agency that issued the ticket as early as possible.
Why the exact match matters
United’s traveler-information page for bookings says the name entered must exactly match the government-issued photo ID you present at the airport, because the airline submits that data under the TSA Secure Flight program. The standard is exact, not approximate. Plan around it rather than assuming a small difference will be overlooked, since United’s public pages describe no tolerance for minor variations.
Step 1: Find the reservation
Start with the reservation itself, because the correction route depends on how the trip was booked.
- Open United’s trip-management page, titled “Find a Trip – Manage Your United Reservations” on united.com.
- Enter the confirmation number and the passenger’s last name, then select the option to find the trip.
- Read the passenger name exactly as it appears on the reservation, letter by letter, and compare it with the ID you plan to use.
Use the identifier that matches how the ticket was sold:

Finding the record is not the same as confirming that you can change it. The lookup pages show the booking but do not say whether a passenger name can be edited there.
Step 2: Check the name against your travel document
- Domestic trips: compare the reservation with the government-issued photo ID you will carry through security and boarding.
- International trips: compare it with the passport or other travel document you will use for the journey, and check it against the reservation rather than your memory of the booking.
- Any difference: treat a misspelling, transposed letters, a missing part of a name, or a different legal name as a mismatch to resolve, not as something the airline will probably ignore.
Step 3: Contact United or the ticket issuer
The contact route depends on the booking channel. United’s public pages list the following options, and none of them is confirmed as a name-correction channel:

- United Travel-Ready Center: the trip-requirements and travel-document pages help you review what a trip requires and manage documents. They do not guarantee that a ticket name will be changed.
- Travel agency or other seller: if you booked through a third party, that seller issued the ticket and may control the correction process. Contact them first.
When you reach someone, ask these specific questions and record the answers with the date and the representative’s name:
- Is this type of change (typo, legal-name update, or passenger substitution) accepted for this ticket?
- Which documents must I provide, and in what format?
- Is there a fee, and if so, what is it and when is it charged?
- Is there a deadline, and does the answer change after check-in?
- Does the answer differ if the trip includes a partner-operated flight or was sold by an agency?
What is and isn’t established
The table below reflects United’s public traveler-information, change-flight, and trip-management pages as reviewed in October 2026. Where a row says “not stated,” the answer is not in those public pages, and you should get it from United or the ticket issuer for your reservation.

United’s agent-facing portal lists a “Name Correction Policy,” but its text was not publicly readable, so it cannot be used to answer these questions for travelers.

- Reopen the reservation in Find a Trip using the same confirmation number and last name, and confirm the name now matches your ID.
- If the ticket was sold by an agency or other third party, confirm the updated record with that seller as well.
- Keep the written confirmation or the representative’s reference number, and check the name again on the boarding pass before you go through security.
If the reservation still shows a different name after you have followed these steps, escalate it through the same channel you used first and keep your notes.
