Understanding Group Term Life Insurance: Coverage, Taxes, and Leaving a Job

Group term life insurance can provide a death benefit through work, but the amount, tax treatment, beneficiary rules, and options after leaving depend on the plan.

Group term life insurance is employer-arranged life insurance that pays a death benefit to the beneficiaries you name if you die while covered. It is usually tied to your job, and its amount, price, exclusions, and continuation options depend on the employer’s plan and your certificate. The federal $50,000 tax threshold is not a recommended coverage amount: it generally determines whether part of the cost of employer-provided coverage is taxable, not how much protection your household needs.

What is group term life insurance?

It is term insurance offered to a group, often through an employer. The policy provides a death benefit for a defined period while coverage remains in force; it ordinarily does not build cash value or function as a savings account. The IRS definition of group-term life insurance includes a general death benefit, coverage for a group, and benefit amounts determined by a formula rather than individually selected amounts. Accidental-death-only coverage is treated differently for this tax purpose. See the IRS group-term life insurance guidance and the NAIC life insurance overview.

An employer may provide basic coverage automatically and offer optional employee-paid coverage, but neither arrangement is universal. The plan may also offer spouse or dependent coverage, or separate accidental-death benefits. The policy and certificate—not the benefit’s general label—set the actual terms.

How much group life insurance do I get through work?

Your benefit may be a fixed amount or calculated using a formula tied to factors such as salary, age, service, or position. It can also have a cap or change at a specified age or employment status. There is no supported universal “typical” amount; check your enrollment materials or ask the benefits administrator for your actual coverage and how it changes.

Is employer-provided life insurance taxable?

For qualifying employer-carried group-term coverage in the United States, the cost of the first $50,000 of coverage is generally excluded from an employee’s income. When coverage exceeds that threshold, the imputed cost of the excess protection is generally included in wages and subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes. The $50,000 figure is a tax threshold, not a limit on the death benefit or a coverage recommendation. The IRS explains the rule in its group-term life insurance guidance.

The taxable amount is generally not the face value of the coverage above $50,000. It is an IRS-table estimate of the cost of that excess protection, adjusted for covered months and qualifying employee-paid premiums. The calculation uses your age on the last day of the tax year and the amount of excess coverage. The IRS’s Publication 17 (2025) lists monthly costs per $1,000 of excess coverage as follows:

Age at year-end IRS monthly cost per $1,000 of excess coverage
Under 25 $0.05
25–29 $0.06
30–34 $0.08
35–39 $0.09
40–44 $0.10
45–49 $0.15
50–54 $0.23
55–59 $0.43
60–64 $0.66
65–69 $1.27
70 and above $2.06

These are the figures in Publication 17 (2025); check the IRS table for the tax year that applies to you. Employers generally report the imputed cost in Form W-2 boxes 1, 3, and 5, and box 12, code C. The exclusion applies across employer coverage, so people with coverage from more than one employer may need to reconcile reporting. Special rules can apply, including for key employees, permanent benefits, certain disabled former employees, and policies not treated as carried directly or indirectly by the employer. For details, consult current IRS Publication 15-B (2026) or a tax professional rather than applying the basic rule to a more complex situation.

Employer-paid spouse or dependent coverage may receive de minimis treatment when its face amount is no more than $2,000, but the IRS says facts and circumstances matter and some larger amounts may qualify. This is not a universal exemption for every dependent benefit; see the IRS guidance.

Who should I name as my life insurance beneficiary?

A beneficiary is the person or entity designated to receive the policy’s proceeds, subject to the policy and plan’s terms. Many plans allow primary and contingent beneficiaries, but the plan’s recorded designation and claim rules control. The NAIC explains these beneficiary categories and recommends reviewing designations in its life insurance consumer insight.

Use the plan’s formal process to make or change a designation, and confirm that the update was recorded. Review names and shares after major family or relationship changes, and make sure your intended beneficiaries know where to find the policy information and how to begin a claim.

What should I check during enrollment?

Before electing or changing coverage, get the plan certificate or other governing materials and confirm these details with the benefits administrator or insurer:

  • The basic death benefit, how it is calculated, and any maximum.
  • Whether and when the amount decreases—for example, at a specified age, status change, or retirement.
  • Which optional employee, spouse, or dependent coverage is available and its current cost, including any age-band changes.
  • Whether evidence of insurability is required for the coverage or election you want.
  • Exclusions, effective-date rules, enrollment deadlines, and when coverage ends.
  • Whether accidental-death benefits are separate from the general life benefit.
  • How to verify and update beneficiary designations.
  • What happens to coverage if your employment or eligibility ends.

Do not assume an election takes effect immediately, that optional coverage is guaranteed without health evidence, or that a listed benefit remains level. The plan’s documents govern those specifics.

What happens to life insurance when I leave my job?

Employer-linked coverage may end when employment or eligibility ends, but the available next steps vary by plan. A plan may offer portability (continuing term coverage), conversion (moving to an individual policy), both, or neither. The Insurance Compact’s group term life policy and certificate standards describe these as certificate provisions with terms such as eligibility, amounts, duration, and election conditions; they do not establish a universal right for every employee.

If a job or status change occurs, contact the benefits administrator or insurer promptly and obtain the certificate. Deadlines can be short. Before choosing an option, compare the actual terms:

What to compare Why it matters
Coverage amount and how it changes The continuation option may not preserve the same benefit.
Premium now and in the future Rates and age-based schedules may differ from the workplace cost.
Duration Determine how long coverage can continue.
Eligibility and health evidence Check whether the option is available to you and whether new evidence is required under the plan.
Application and payment deadline Missing a deadline may forfeit the option.
Additional benefits Find out whether spouse/dependent coverage or accidental-death components continue.

Portability generally means continuing term protection; conversion means applying to move to an individual policy. Neither label guarantees the same price, amount, duration, or additional benefits as the workplace coverage. Compare the offered terms before relying on either option.
