Are 050 Numbers Free? What UK Callers Need to Know

If you mean the UK’s 0500 range, it used to be Freephone—but it was withdrawn on 5 June 2017. Today, Ofcom identifies 0800 and 0808 as Freephone numbers; calls to them are free for consumers calling from landlines and mobile phones. The shorter prefix “050” does not mean that every number beginning with those digits is free.

What does “050” mean?

The historical UK Freephone range was 0500, not every number beginning with 050 or 05. For example, BT distinguishes 0500 from 055 corporate numbers and 056 location-independent communications numbers, which are typically used for VoIP. Check the full number rather than assuming its cost from the first two or three digits. BT’s guide to UK phone number types

Is 0500 still free to call?

No. Ofcom says the 0500 range was withdrawn on 5 June 2017. It was closed to new allocations before withdrawal, and numbers already allocated could continue to be used during the transition. 0500 is therefore a historical range, not a current consumer Freephone option. Which UK numbers are free now?

Ofcom identifies 0800 and 0808 as Freephone numbers. Calls to these numbers are free for consumers using either a landline or a mobile phone. If you are calling from a business phone, check with your provider because a charge may apply. Ofcom’s call costs guide

How to check what a call will cost

  1. Identify the full number. Do not treat “050” alone as proof that a call is free; distinguish the historical 0500 range from other number ranges.
  2. Check whether it is 0800 or 0808. Ofcom says consumer calls to these Freephone numbers are free from landlines and mobile phones.
  3. For other prefixes, consult your provider’s tariff. GOV.UK explains that call costs can depend on the number, provider, and whether you call from a landline or mobile. Its general figures are approximate, so confirm the actual rate with your provider. GOV.UK guidance on call charges
  4. Check the bill if you have already called. The charge shown by your provider is the practical reference for your account and plan.

Why 0500 disappeared

Ofcom’s 2014 decision statement reported that just 4% of consumers recognised 0500 numbers as Freephone. It also said 0500 calls terminated by BT and Vodafone represented less than 2% of their combined 080 call volume in 2013. These are historical figures cited in Ofcom’s 2014 decision, not current consumer statistics. Ofcom’s 2014 decision statement
