The most important pre-fight matchup question was whether Du Plessis could keep Chimaev’s wrestling from dictating the fight. In the cage, Chimaev’s early takedowns and sustained top control answered it.

What decided the fight?
Chimaev established the wrestling early

That pattern made the central matchup issue concrete: Du Plessis needed to defend, reverse or escape the takedowns often enough to create sustained offense on the feet. Instead, Chimaev repeatedly put him on the mat and controlled where much of the fight took place. The wide scorecards are consistent with that account of the bout; they do not, by themselves, establish how a pre-fight wager would have performed.
Du Plessis’s rally came late
Du Plessis avoided significant damage in the first round, according to AP, and had a more active moment late in the fifth. He secured a takedown and attempted a guillotine, but the late surge came after Chimaev had controlled most of the contest and did not change the result.

Afterward, Du Plessis acknowledged the outcome: “He beat me fair and square tonight; he was the better man tonight. I’ll be back,” AP reported. Chimaev praised his opponent’s toughness, saying, “That guy is tough to finish. Respect that guy.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the result compare with the pre-fight betting case?
The useful retrospective is about the matchup, not a claim that a particular wager was profitable. A Chimaev-focused case depended on his ability to turn wrestling into extended control; a Du Plessis-focused case depended on stopping or reversing those entries and creating enough standing offense to make the fight competitive. The reported action favored the first scenario: Chimaev secured early and repeated takedowns, spent long stretches on top, and kept Du Plessis from building a sustained stand-up attack until late.

- Chimaev won the middleweight title bout by unanimous decision, with three 50–44 cards.
- His opening-seconds takedown and continued top control were the defining features reported by AP.
- Du Plessis’s fifth-round takedown and guillotine attempt produced a late opportunity, not a reversal of the bout’s earlier pattern.
- The official weigh-in numbers were 185 pounds for Du Plessis and 183 for Chimaev; they should not be treated as fight-night weights.
