Ubisoft’s Q1 FY2024–25 Results: Net Bookings Beat Target as XDefiant Launched

Ubisoft reported €290.0 million in net bookings for the first quarter of fiscal 2024–25, 8.3% higher than a year earlier and above its target of about €275.0 million. The quarter ended June 30, 2024; the company released the results on July 18, 2024. Ubisoft also described engagement across its games-as-a-service (GaaS) franchises as robust and said XDefiant had made an encouraging start, but it did not report a player count or isolate the game’s financial contribution.

How did Ubisoft perform in Q1 FY2024–25?

The results were ahead of Ubisoft’s net-bookings target, though the company reported several distinct measures that should not be treated as interchangeable. Ubisoft’s July 18, 2024 results release covers the three months ended June 30, 2024.

Measure Q1 FY2024–25 Change or comparison
Net bookings €290.0 million Up 8.3% year over year; Ubisoft’s target was about €275.0 million
IFRS 15 sales €323.5 million Up 12.0% reported and 11.4% at constant exchange rates, from €288.9 million
Digital net bookings €257.2 million Up 6.6%; 88.7% of net bookings, versus 90.2% a year earlier
PRI net bookings €158.7 million Up 24.6%; 54.7% of net bookings, versus 47.6% a year earlier
Back-catalog net bookings €249.5 million Up 1.5%; 86.0% of net bookings, versus 91.8% a year earlier

Net bookings and IFRS 15 sales are different measures: Ubisoft reported each separately, and the €290.0 million net-bookings figure should not be substituted for €323.5 million in sales. The release also described net bookings as ahead of target, a useful indication of performance against the company’s own quarterly expectation.

What did Ubisoft say about engagement and XDefiant?

Ubisoft characterized engagement across its GaaS franchises as robust. XDefiant’s Season 0 launched on May 21, 2024, during the quarter. Chief executive Yves Guillemot called its start “encouraging” and said the audience was growing “at a steady pace.” Those are management’s qualitative assessments; the release provided no XDefiant player total.

Guillemot said: “In a selective market, we delivered a solid start to the year with net bookings above target, reaffirming that we are on the right track. The quarter notably saw the launch of XDefiant, that is off to an encouraging start as we continue to grow the audience at a steady pace and plan a quarterly roadmap of content that will allow us to firmly establish the game over time.”

The release discussed the launch alongside broader portfolio engagement, but did not quantify how much XDefiant contributed to net bookings or sales. It therefore supports saying the game launched during a quarter Ubisoft described positively, not that XDefiant caused the company’s overall results or that its audience can be compared with other Ubisoft games from these figures.

What happened after the quarter?

Season 1 began on July 2, 2024, after the quarter had ended. Ubisoft said it marked the start of the planned quarterly content roadmap, with factions inspired by Ubisoft franchises, maps, weapons, game modes and engagement features to be added progressively.

The outlook changed later. On December 3, 2024, Ubisoft announced that it was discontinuing XDefiant development, stopping new downloads and registrations, and keeping servers online until June 3, 2025. That announced server-closure date has passed, so XDefiant is discontinued rather than an active service for players. The company also said the decision involved closing its San Francisco and Osaka production studios and reducing its Sydney production site, with associated workforce departures. Ubisoft’s discontinuation announcement gives the later timeline.
