Ubisoft’s January 13, 2026 announcement was a proposal that could affect approximately 55 roles across two Swedish studios: Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm. It did not say that 55 people at Massive alone had been laid off, and the reviewed sources do not confirm how many departures ultimately occurred.
What Ubisoft announced
Ubisoft told employees at its Swedish studios that a proposed organizational restructure might affect approximately 55 roles across Malmö and Stockholm. The announcement covered both Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm, without allocating the roles by studio, city, department, or job function. Game Informer’s January 13 report, which reproduced Ubisoft’s statement supplied to IGN, describes the proposal.
That wording matters: the figure is an approximate number of roles potentially affected, not a confirmed count of people dismissed. The available statement calls the changes proposed, and the sources reviewed do not establish the final departure count or whether every proposed reduction was implemented.
Which studios and locations are involved?
The January proposal covered Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm together. Ubisoft named Malmö and Stockholm as the affected locations, but did not say how the approximately 55 roles were divided between the studios or cities. A studio-specific estimate, or a claim that all 55 roles belonged to Massive, would go beyond the published information.

Why did Ubisoft say it was restructuring?
Ubisoft said the proposal followed completion of a fall 2025 Voluntary Leave Program, a finalized long-term roadmap, and a completed staffing and appointment process. It characterized the changes as forward-looking and structural, and said they were not related to individual performance, recent deliveries, or the quality of the teams’ work. These are Ubisoft’s stated rationale and characterization, not independently established causes. The company had said in its FY2025–26 half-year earnings release that a targeted voluntary leave program and proposed restructuring at its Nordic studios had been introduced in October 2025.
The same earnings release reported Ubisoft’s global headcount as 17,097 at the end of September 2025, down around 1,500 over the prior 12 months. That is company-wide context, not a headcount for Massive, so it cannot show what share of the studio’s workforce might be affected.

What did Ubisoft say about projects?
Ubisoft said the studios’ long-term direction would remain unchanged. It identified their role as the global home and lead for The Division franchise, work on an unannounced technology project with a refined team setup, and a central role in Snowdrop and Ubisoft Connect. The statement described planned direction; it did not provide a project-by-project staffing plan or detail any effect on schedules.
Massive’s official studio history describes the Sweden-based studio’s work on The Division franchise, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Star Wars Outlaws, Snowdrop, and Ubisoft Connect. Its official jobs page has listed openings in Malmö and Stockholm, including roles connected to The Division and unannounced projects; those listings are a changing snapshot and do not determine the outcome or scale of the proposed reductions.

How the later Massive identity update fits in
On January 21, 2026, Ubisoft’s broader portfolio-reset announcement also described restructuring at Massive. That was part of a wider company announcement, not a published final count for the January proposal.
On September 30, 2026, Ubisoft said development teams in Montréal, Paris, Sweden, and Toronto would operate under the shared Massive Entertainment identity, with Ubisoft remaining publisher and distributor for games under the brand. Its update on the next chapter of Massive Entertainment describes a later organizational development. It does not establish whether, or how many, of the roles proposed in January resulted in departures.
