On November 7, 2023, Ubisoft confirmed that 124 positions were being eliminated, 98 of them in Canada. The company said it was reorganizing general and administrative functions at its Canadian studios and reducing headcount at the Montreal VFX studio Hybride and in its global IT group. It also said production teams were not affected. The phrase “streamline operations” is Ubisoft’s own explanation for the cuts, not an independently verified cause.
What Ubisoft announced
The layoffs were reported on November 7, 2023 by GamesBeat and GameSpot, which both gave the same overall and Canadian totals. The GamesBeat article was later updated on June 18, 2025. Ubisoft’s spokesperson described a restructuring aimed at improving efficiency across the company, and the announced scope covered 124 positions in total.
Two points in the coverage are easy to misread. First, the 98 Canadian positions were not all at Hybride. Most came from business administrative services and IT in Canada, and the rest were at Hybride. Second, the event is a single restructuring from late 2023. It is not the same thing as Ubisoft’s later, company-wide workforce figures, which are covered below.
The numbers and what each one covers
Several figures circulated in the coverage. They measure different things, so they should not be added together or compared directly.

Which teams were affected
Canadian business administration and IT
Ubisoft said it was reorganizing the general and administrative functions of its Canadian studios. Business administrative services and IT roles in Canada made up most of the 98 Canadian positions. The coverage did not break this group down further by number.
Hybride
Hybride is a Montreal-based visual effects studio. It is separate from Ubisoft Montreal, the game development studio, and the layoffs at Hybride were reported as one part of the Canadian figure, not as the whole of it.

Global IT
Ubisoft’s statement also referred to reducing headcount in global IT. The coverage reviewed does not give a separate number for IT positions outside Canada, so the 124 total cannot be split precisely between Canadian and non-Canadian IT roles.
Production teams
Ubisoft said the restructuring did not affect production teams. That is the company’s statement, and it is the only account of this point available in the reporting. Nothing in the coverage independently confirmed which teams were or were not touched.

The company’s explanation and its limits
The reason Ubisoft gave was the need to streamline operations. A spokesperson told reporters that every team had been exploring ways to streamline operations and enhance collective efficiency, so the company was better positioned for long-term success. GameSpot reproduced the line “This restructuring does not affect our production teams.” PC Gamer reproduced the longer statement. Neither quote names an individual speaker.
Ubisoft presented this as an operating decision. The coverage did not include independent evidence of the business conditions behind it, such as a specific cost target tied to these roles, so the explanation should be read as the company’s stated rationale rather than a verified cause.

Support offered to affected employees
Ubisoft said it would provide comprehensive support. The Canadian-specific details reported were severance packages, extended benefits where applicable, and career assistance. The coverage does not state that every measure applied in the same way to all 124 positions, and the eligibility rules for benefits were not published in the reporting. Anyone affected should confirm the terms that apply to their own contract and location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ubisoft’s later workforce figures are a separate story
Ubisoft’s FY2023–24 earnings release, dated May 15, 2024, described continuing organizational simplification and targeted restructuring, including Global Publishing reorganizations. Those figures describe the company as a whole at a later date. They do not measure the November 2023 cuts, and they should not be added to the 124 positions. Ubisoft’s headcount and cost figures for later periods may have changed since that release.

If you are facing a similar restructuring
The Ubisoft case is useful as a reference for what a layoff announcement typically includes. Before you accept any package, check these items:
- Get the severance terms in writing, including the amount, the calculation method, and the payment schedule.
- Ask how long health and other benefits continue, and whether the coverage is extended or ends on your last day.
- Confirm what happens to final pay, accrued vacation, and any bonus or equity that was already earned.
- Ask whether career assistance is a placement service, a training budget, or outplacement counselling, and what its time limit is.
- Keep copies of your contract, pay records, and any written notice, since these are the documents you will need to check the terms.
These steps apply to most employers. The specific rules depend on your location and contract, so take them to an employment lawyer or your local labor authority if the terms are unclear.
