What was reported in October 2024
The original report came from the Financial Times on October 16, 2024. Skift covered it the same day under the headline “The Dream Deal: Uber Exploring Buying Expedia, Says FT,” and noted that no formal approach had been made and that Expedia was not commenting. Skift’s account is the most direct summary of that position. Axios followed on October 17 and reported that a person familiar with the process said there were no current discussions. Its October 17 article described the idea as very early-stage.
The Financial Times article itself is not reproduced here. This account relies on the Axios and Skift summaries, which agree on the key point: in October 2024, an acquisition had been considered but not formally pursued, and it was not a deal in progress.
What the 2024 reports do and do not establish
- Established: Uber had examined an acquisition of Expedia, according to the Financial Times as relayed by Axios and Skift.
- Not established: an offer, a price, an agreement, or a formal approach to Expedia’s board.
- Not knowable from public reporting: whether private conversations took place after October 2024. Avoid stating that no talks have occurred since then, because the available coverage cannot rule that out.
The story drew attention partly because of people. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi led Expedia for more than a decade, through 2017, and remained a non-executive Expedia director, according to Axios. That history explains why the idea was newsworthy. It does not show that Uber made a bid or that Expedia was willing to sell.

Market capitalization and share-price figures from that week appeared in the 2024 coverage. They reflect market conditions at the time and are not current values, so they should not be used to judge either company today.
What changed in 2026: the Expedia hotel partnership
The April 29, 2026 announcement
On April 29, 2026, Uber announced hotel bookings in its app powered by Expedia Group inventory, starting with U.S. users. In its investor relations press release, Uber said the hotel selection would ultimately grow to more than 700,000 properties around the world and that the partnership was expected to expand beyond the United States. These are company statements about planned scope. They do not confirm that every property is bookable in every location today.

The companies also described Uber rides being integrated into the Expedia app, so the arrangement runs in both directions. The Associated Press, in its April 29, 2026 report, said more than 1 million Vrbo vacation rentals were planned for addition to the Uber app later that year. Confirm whether Vrbo listings are live in your market before you rely on them, because that timing was a plan at the time of the announcement.

In a TechCrunch interview published July 13, 2026, Uber Chief Product Officer Sachin Kansal said: “Our headline announcement this time was actually introducing hotels on Uber as a partnership with Expedia.” He framed the hotel feature as a partnership and said the two companies built the Uber app interface together.

Competition context from regulators
A 2023 European Commission merger decision on Booking Holdings and eTraveli Group discusses competitive parameters in hotel online travel agency (OTA) markets. It says that, based on the evidence before it at that time, the Commission had not found evidence that Uber had entered the EEA hotel OTA market. That is historical, case-specific context. It is not a current ruling on Uber’s 2026 U.S. hotel feature, and it says nothing about a hypothetical Uber acquisition of Expedia. The decision document is the primary source.
