Uber’s Teqtivity Vendor Breach: What Employee Data Leaked in 2022

In December 2022, reports said a threat actor had stolen employee work contact details, device records and internal corporate files from Teqtivity, an IT equipment management vendor used by Uber. Uber said it was looking into the matter. The story is a 2022 report, not a recent incident. This article explains what was reported, what Uber and the vendor said at the time, and which points remain unverified.

What the December 2022 report says leaked

The reporting, published by TechTimes on December 12, 2022 and citing Bloomberg, lists these categories of data:

  • Employee first and last names
  • Work email addresses
  • Work location details
  • Device serial numbers, makes, models and technical specifications
  • Corporate reports and IT asset information
  • Archives containing source code related to mobile device management platforms used for Uber apps and vendor services

The same reporting says more than 77,000 employees were affected. That figure comes from the contemporaneous article and is not a verified final count. The threat actor called itself “UberLeaks” and claimed the material came from Uber and Uber Eats systems. Teqtivity confirmed that the attack took place. Neither Teqtivity nor Uber has published a final notified population or a forensic report that the sources behind this article confirm.

What was reported as not exposed

The article described the reviewed material as internal corporate information and said it did not include customer data. It also reported Teqtivity’s statement that it does not collect or store sensitive information such as bank account details or government identification numbers.

These were statements and findings reported at the time. They are not an independent guarantee that no further data would later surface. If you are assessing your own exposure, treat the list above as the reported scope, not as a complete inventory.

Why work contact and device data still matters for your money

Names, work email addresses and device details do not, on their own, open a bank account or move money. They do make phishing easier to write convincingly. A message that uses your real name, your work address and the model of the laptop your company issued is more believable than a generic lure. Fraudsters can use that kind of detail to pose as IT support, a device-replacement program or a vendor requesting payment. The reporting did not describe any such campaign, so this is a risk to plan for, not a documented outcome.

Uber’s response

TechTimes quoted Uber spokesperson Carissa Simons: “Based on our initial review of the information available, the code is not owned by Uber; however, we are continuing to look into this matter.”

The same report said the third party had confirmed the data seen to date came from Uber’s systems, and that Uber had not seen malicious access to its internal systems. Those two positions sit uneasily together, and the reporting did not resolve them. Read the statements as Uber’s and the vendor’s positions at the time.

Three Uber incidents, kept separate

Uber has been involved in several security incidents. The December 2022 vendor event is easy to confuse with two others, so the table below compares them on the points that matter.

Item Teqtivity vendor incident (reported December 2022) Contractor-account intrusion (September 2022) Breach of 2016
Date and source TechTimes, December 12, 2022, citing Bloomberg Uber’s update filed with the SEC on September 19, 2022 Described in a U.S. Department of Justice release, July 2022
Who described it Vendor confirmed the attack, per the reporting; Uber said it was looking into it Uber U.S. Department of Justice
Access path Not stated in the reporting Compromised EXT contractor account, then other employee accounts and internal tools Stolen credentials used to access a private source-code repository
Data categories Employee names, work emails, work locations, device details, corporate reports, IT asset information, source code archives related to mobile device management platforms Internal Slack messages and information in a finance tool appeared to have been accessed or downloaded, per Uber Data associated with approximately 57 million user records, including 600,000 driver’s license numbers
Stated scope Third party said data seen to date came from Uber’s systems; Uber had not seen malicious access to internal systems Uber said it had not seen access to production systems, user accounts, sensitive user databases or customer data stored by cloud providers; Uber believed the attacker was affiliated with Lapsus$ As described by the Department of Justice
Response or outcome Not stated in the reporting reviewed Uber disabled affected tools, reset or blocked employee accounts, rotated keys, required reauthentication and increased internal monitoring The July 2022 release described Uber’s agreement resolving the criminal investigation into the concealment of the breach

Do not transfer figures or outcomes from one row to another. The 57 million figure belongs to the 2016 breach, and the 77,000 figure belongs to the December 2022 reporting.

Uber’s current governance disclosures

Uber’s 2026 Governance Strategy and Engagement Report describes CISO oversight, regular security assessments, incident response procedures, third-party due diligence, and contractual notification duties for certain supplier incidents. It reports zero material cybersecurity breaches in each of 2023, 2024 and 2025. “Material” is defined by U.S. securities law, which is narrower than “any incident involving employee data.” The report is a company disclosure and does not revisit the details of the 2022 vendor event.

What to do if your employer uses a similar vendor

  1. Ask your employer’s IT or security team whether it uses an IT asset management vendor, and whether your device records were in scope for any incident. Request the answer in writing.
  2. Treat unexpected messages about your device, an IT ticket or a replacement as suspicious until you verify them. Use the internal phone number or ticketing portal you already know, not a link or number in the message.
  3. Confirm any change to direct deposit, a payroll address or a vendor’s bank details through a second channel before acting on it.
  4. Protect your work and personal email with unique passwords and an app-based or hardware two-factor method.
  5. Report suspicious messages to your security team and keep copies.
  6. If you receive an official notice that names personal information about you, follow its instructions and the guidance of your national or state regulator.

What remains unverified

  • The final number of people notified. The 77,000-plus figure is the contemporaneous report’s number.
  • Any forensic findings beyond the statements reported in December 2022.
  • Whether data outside the listed categories was involved.
  • Any regulatory action or remediation outcome specific to the Teqtivity event.

Where the sources do not confirm a detail, this article does not assume it.
