Uber’s Racketeering Lawsuits: What It Alleges About Crash-Related Injury Claims

Uber alleges that some crash-related injury claims were supported by coordinated referrals, treatment and false records. The lawsuits have different allegations and procedural outcomes, and none of the cited rulings establishes the claims as fact.

Uber has filed separate lawsuits alleging that some crash-related injury claims were inflated or supported by coordinated conduct involving lawyers, medical providers and, in some allegations, drivers. The cases are not one nationwide lawsuit, and their outcomes differ: a Philadelphia case survived a pleading-stage challenge, a New York suit was reportedly dismissed for pleading deficiencies, and the allegations in the complaints have not been established as facts by a trial verdict.

What does Uber allege happened after some crashes?

Uber’s complaints describe alleged schemes in which minor or staged collisions were followed by medical referrals, treatment, records or bills that the company says supported exaggerated injury claims and larger settlement demands. The alleged conduct varies by lawsuit. Uber does not allege the same facts against every defendant in every city, and the cases should not be treated as proof that crashes or claims generally are fraudulent.

In the Philadelphia case, Uber and FedEx alleged a course of conduct involving claimant referrals, treatment and repeated false medical or billing records tied to dozens of lawsuits. U.S. District Judge Mark A. Kearney described the pleaded theory this way: “This is not a case involving a single lawsuit supported by allegedly false filings.” That statement characterized the allegations before the court; it was not a finding that the alleged conduct occurred.

Uber’s Florida complaint alleged staged crashes, unnecessary care and allegedly false records used to support injury claims and seek larger settlements. In New York, Uber alleged a network involving law firms and medical providers, including alleged mail fraud, wire fraud and witness bribery. A separate Los Angeles case, according to a June 2026 trade-publication report, concerned alleged inflated medical bills and settlement demands linked to minor rideshare accidents.

How do the lawsuits and their reported statuses differ?

These are separate proceedings with different defendants, allegations and procedural histories. A complaint states one side’s claims; a court’s ruling on whether those claims are adequately pleaded does not decide whether the allegations are true.

Venue and case What Uber alleged Reported procedural status
Philadelphia — Uber Technologies, Inc. v. Simon & Simon P.C. Uber and FedEx alleged coordinated conduct involving dozens of lawsuits, claimant referrals, treatment and false medical or billing records. On May 11, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania held the racketeering claims sufficiently pleaded to proceed at that stage. In an August 27, 2026 opinion addressing defendants’ counterclaims, the judge dismissed the lawyers’ civil-extortion claim with prejudice and dismissed certain other claims without prejudice. Neither opinion was a trial verdict on the underlying allegations.
Florida — complaint filed June 11, 2025 Uber alleged staged crashes, unnecessary care and allegedly false records supporting injury claims and settlement demands. The complaint is the procedural information stated in the available record; a later ruling or case status is not established here. Uber claimed several million dollars in defense costs and settlements, an allegation in its complaint rather than an independently verified or adjudicated loss.
New York — complaint filed January 30, 2025 Uber alleged a network involving law firms and medical providers, and asserted mail-fraud, wire-fraud, witness-bribery and RICO claims. A September 2026 trade-publication report said a federal judge dismissed the suit on August 14, 2026 for pleading deficiencies. The report characterized the ruling as not deciding whether the alleged conduct occurred; the underlying opinion is not available in the sources summarized here.
Los Angeles — reported filing in July 2025 A June 2026 secondary report said Uber accused attorney Jacob Emrani, his firm and co-defendants of alleged inflated medical bills and settlement demands tied to minor rideshare accidents. The report supplies the filing allegation, but a verified docket and later procedural status are not established here.

What does it mean that a racketeering claim survived in Philadelphia?

A court considering a motion to dismiss generally evaluates whether a complaint pleads enough legally relevant facts for a claim to continue under the applicable standard. In Philadelphia, the May 11, 2026 ruling allowed Uber and FedEx’s racketeering claims to proceed past that stage because the court found the pleaded theory sufficiently detailed and broader than isolated allegedly false filings.

That is a procedural decision, not proof of fraud, a determination of liability or an award of damages. The August 27 opinion likewise addressed counterclaims and the adequacy of the companies’ pleaded claims; it did not resolve the truth of the alleged crash, treatment or record-making conduct after a trial.

What can readers conclude about the alleged losses and scale?

The Philadelphia court described Uber’s allegations as involving “dozens” of lawsuits. That is a description of the pleaded allegations, not an independently verified count of fraudulent claims. Uber’s Florida complaint claimed several million dollars in defense costs and settlements, but that figure is the company’s allegation and is not an adjudicated damages amount.

No independently verified portfolio-wide total for staged crashes, affected claims or losses is established by the available case information. Figures from different lawsuits should not be added together or presented as a single nationwide total without a sourced basis.

What the lawsuits do—and do not—establish

  • They establish what Uber has alleged: the complaints describe alleged crash staging or minor collisions, medical referrals or treatment, disputed records and bills, and settlement claims. The details and defendants differ by venue.
  • They establish some procedural outcomes: Philadelphia racketeering claims survived a pleading challenge; a September 2026 report says the New York case was dismissed for pleading deficiencies; other statuses are not established here.
  • They do not establish that the alleged schemes occurred: the complaints remain allegations, and the cited procedural rulings are not merits findings after trial.
  • They do not show that every injury claim or rideshare crash is suspect: the lawsuits concern particular defendants and allegations, not all claims involving Uber or other rideshare companies.
