Lior Ron left the chief executive role at Uber Freight to join autonomous-trucking company Waabi as chief operating officer, the companies announced on August 12, 2025. Ron was also set to transition to chairman at Uber Freight, where Rebecca Tinucci was named his successor as CEO. Waabi said Ron would help scale operations, partnerships and commercialization; the announcements did not give his exact first day in the new role.
What changed in August 2025
Waabi announced Ron’s appointment as COO on August 12, 2025. On the same day, Uber Freight announced that Tinucci would become CEO and that Ron would transition to chairman. The announcements describe a change in executive roles, not Ron’s complete departure from Uber Freight. Waabi’s announcement and Uber Freight’s announcement do not specify the exact date he began work at Waabi.
Why Waabi hired Ron
Waabi framed the appointment as preparation for commercializing its autonomous-trucking technology at scale. The company said Ron would scale operations and lead go-to-market work. Waabi founder and CEO Raquel Urtasun told TechCrunch that Ron would lead the go-to-market strategy, expand partnerships and help move the company toward commercialization. Those statements describe the intended remit, not evidence of results.
Ron described the move as a new challenge focused on self-driving technology. In his August 2025 announcement, he wrote: “After almost a decade building Uber Freight into the leading end-to-end intelligent logistics company, it is time for my next challenge: making self-driving a reality at scale.”
How Uber Freight and Waabi were already connected
The companies had a commercial relationship before Ron’s move. In 2023, they announced a strategic partnership intended to bring Waabi Driver capacity to the Uber Freight network. Waabi’s 2025 announcement said the partnership committed to deploying billions of miles; that is a stated commitment, not a report that those miles had already been driven. Uber Freight’s 2023 partnership announcement describes the arrangement.
The companies also cited different scale measures in their 2025 announcements. Uber Freight said it had more than $20 billion in Freight Under Management. Waabi characterized Uber Freight as having over $5 billion in annual revenue and serving one in three Fortune 500 shippers. These are company-reported figures with different definitions; they should not be read as equivalent or independently audited statistics. Uber Freight’s release gives the Freight Under Management figure, while Waabi’s release gives the revenue and shipper claims.
What the companies do—and why the distinction matters
Uber Freight provides freight-marketplace and logistics services, connecting shippers and carriers. Waabi develops autonomous-driving technology for trucking. The companies’ partnership links those different roles: Waabi supplies autonomous-driving capability, while Uber Freight’s network can connect capacity with freight demand. The partnership announcement does not mean the companies are the same business or that every shipment on the network uses autonomous trucks.

Yes, according to an October 5, 2026 announcement by Waabi and Volvo Autonomous Solutions, which said customer freight operations with logistics company Warp were underway on a Houston–Dallas route. That is a later development than Ron’s appointment. It does not establish that the trucks were operating without a human in the driver’s seat: Axios reported that fully driverless operation and expansion to additional routes were future plans. Waabi’s company site provides current company updates.
