U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, while the 10-year Treasury yield fell—not rose—according to the latest completed session covered in the available reports. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite set record closing highs, while the Dow also advanced.

How the major indexes finished on October 6

Associated Press reported these closing levels and daily changes:

Index October 6 close Daily change
S&P 500 7,818.93 Up 0.6%
Dow Jones Industrial Average 51,521.28 Up 0.5%
Nasdaq Composite 27,599.79 Up 0.4%

AP described the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite as closing at record highs. These figures describe the October 6 session, not a live market update. Associated Press market report.

What happened to Treasury yields

The 10-year Treasury yield was 5.28% at the close, down from 5.31% late Monday, AP reported. Reuters also characterized yields as easing during the October 6 session. That means “yields rise” does not accurately describe the reported close-to-close direction for that day. Reuters report carried by MarketScreener.

Yield comparisons depend on the maturity and time being compared. An intraday move, a closing yield, and a comparison with the prior session’s late reading are not interchangeable; this report’s 5.28% figure is specifically the 10-year yield at the October 6 close.

Why stocks advanced, according to market coverage

News coverage pointed to several supportive themes rather than establishing a single cause. Investors were looking toward the start of third-quarter earnings season, and Reuters cited optimism about artificial intelligence and expected corporate profits as support for technology shares. Reports also noted steadier crude prices and easing Treasury yields, which can reduce some concerns about energy-driven inflation and borrowing costs. These are reported market explanations, not proof that any one factor caused the gains. Reuters; Kitco market coverage.

Earnings estimates were forecasts, not results

Reuters reported LSEG estimates that analysts expected aggregate S&P 500 earnings for July through September 2026 to grow 30.6% year over year. The reported forecasts were 114.7% growth for energy and 66.5% for technology. Those numbers describe expectations for the quarter, not earnings companies had already reported; actual results can differ. Reuters report on the earnings outlook.

Why another session may fit the “yields rise” wording

A different date offers a plausible explanation for the mismatch, but it cannot identify the exact session implied by the original wording. Reuters reported on Monday, October 5, that Treasury yields climbed while stocks advanced, the Nasdaq reached a record, and the S&P 500 also rose. That earlier report is distinct from October 6, when the 10-year yield was lower at the close. Reuters report for October 5.

When comparing market headlines, check the session date, whether the observation is intraday or at the close, the index and its measured move, and the Treasury maturity and comparison time. A stock index can rise during a period when a yield rises, but the two directions should only be presented as matching observations when their dates and measurement windows do.
