The $1.7 billion Powerball jackpot was an estimated annuity prize for the September 6, 2025 drawing—not a lump-sum check or a current jackpot. Powerball estimated the cash option at $770.3 million before taxes. A simplified federal-only illustration leaves about $485.3 million after applying the 2025 top marginal rate to the entire cash estimate, but that is not a tax-return calculation, and state and local taxes can reduce the eventual amount further.
What did the $1.7 billion Powerball estimate mean?
Powerball announced the $1.70 billion estimate on September 4, 2025, for the Saturday, September 6 drawing. The headline amount represented the estimated annuity value before taxes. The separate estimated cash option was $770.3 million before taxes. These were estimates for that drawing, not amounts a winner was guaranteed to receive as a single payment.
Powerball explains that the cash value is the amount needed to fund the estimated annuity, and that advertised estimates may change until ticket sales close and annuity securities are priced. Powerball’s September 6, 2025 drawing announcement gives the prize estimates.
How the cash and annuity options compare
| Option | What it meant for this drawing | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cash | Estimated $770.3 million before taxes, paid as the cash option | Provides the prize as a lump sum, with the winner responsible for managing and investing it. |
| Annuity | Estimated $1.70 billion before taxes, paid as one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year | Spreads payments over time rather than providing the full advertised annuity value up front. |
The headline annuity total is not directly comparable to a same-day lump sum: it is distributed across 30 payments, while the cash option is the estimated amount available as a lump sum. The better choice depends on the winner’s circumstances, priorities and ability to manage a large sum. New Jersey Lottery Executive Director James Carey put it this way: “Whether you take the cash or the annuity depends on your individual situation.” He advised winners to seek financial guidance and take time to make an informed decision in a September 4, 2025 New Jersey Lottery release.

How much might the cash option leave after federal taxes?
A rough illustration using the estimated $770.3 million cash option is to apply 37% to the full amount. That produces about $285.0 million in federal tax and leaves approximately $485.3 million before state or local taxes.
This is a simplified top-rate illustration, not an estimate of the winner’s final tax bill. For tax year 2025, the IRS listed the 37% marginal rate for a single filer on taxable income above $626,350. Federal income tax is progressive: only income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket’s rate. Filing status, deductions and other income affect a real calculation. The IRS’s 2025 federal income tax rates and brackets explain the thresholds and marginal-rate structure.

Why the initial federal withholding is not the final tax bill
The IRS treats lottery winnings as taxable gambling income that must be reported. For qualifying lottery proceeds over $5,000, federal withholding is generally 24%. Applied to the estimated $770.3 million cash option, that would mean about $184.9 million withheld and an initial payment of roughly $585.4 million, before any state withholding. The IRS describes lottery reporting in its gambling income guidance and the withholding rate in its 2026 Form 945 instructions.
Withholding is a prepayment, not a special final tax rate. The winner’s tax return reconciles what was withheld with the tax actually owed; additional federal tax may be due. The 24% withholding figure therefore should not be treated as the winner’s after-tax amount.

Why there is no single take-home figure
Federal tax is only part of the picture. State and local tax treatment varies, and the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold matters. Powerball says a winning ticket must be claimed in the jurisdiction where it was sold and that federal and jurisdictional taxes may apply. Without the ticket’s jurisdiction and the winner’s tax details, there is no universal net amount. For that reason, the approximately $485.3 million figure is only a federal-only illustration, not a prediction of what a particular winner would keep.
For a specific estimate, a winner would need to account for the ticket jurisdiction, filing status, other income, deductions, payment choice and applicable state and local rules. The eventual take-home amount cannot be calculated from the advertised jackpot alone.
