In a morning snapshot on October 5, 2026, U.S. stocks were little changed near record levels even as oil prices swung between $100 and $103 a barrel. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq rose, while the Dow slipped; uncertainty over when crude production affected by the war with Iran might return to normal was part of the day’s market backdrop.

How the major U.S. indexes moved

At 9:35 a.m. Eastern, the S&P 500 was up 0.2% and stood 0.8% below its summer all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had fallen 103 points, or 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite was up 0.5% and on track to set its own record, according to the Associated Press’s October 5 report.

The mixed readings show why “the market” can be an oversimplification: the three indexes tracked different groups of companies and did not move in lockstep. The figures are a morning snapshot, not closing results or current market levels.

What happened to oil prices

Brent crude moved between $100 and $103 per barrel that morning. Its latest price reported by the AP was $101.83, down 0.4%. That quoted decline is relative to the prior reference price; it does not mean oil traded steadily lower throughout the morning.

The report linked the volatility to uncertainty over when the war with Iran would allow the global crude industry to return to normal. It said that uncertainty had also helped push bond yields higher.

Why Treasury yields matter to stocks

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to 5.30% from 5.28% late Friday, the AP reported. A yield is the return investors receive from holding a Treasury bond, expressed as an annual rate. When yields rise, borrowing can become more expensive, and bonds may look more appealing relative to stocks, putting pressure on the prices investors are willing to pay for shares.

That is a potential transmission channel, not proof that a small yield change alone caused the indexes’ moves. In this report, the link between oil uncertainty and yields was presented as part of the market explanation, rather than as a definitive account of every stock-price change.

Company deals moved individual shares

Acquisition news drove much larger moves in some stocks than the broad indexes recorded. The AP reported the following on October 5:

Company or transaction Reported terms or move
C.H. Robinson and RXO C.H. Robinson announced it would buy RXO’s truck brokerage business. RXO investors could receive $30.25 per share in cash. RXO shares rose 23%, while C.H. Robinson shares fell 10.2%.
Schneider Electric and PTC Schneider Electric announced a $205-per-share cash offer for PTC in a transaction valued at about $22.6 billion. PTC shares rose 35.3%.

These were announced offers and proposed terms as reported that morning; the figures do not establish whether either transaction later closed, received regulatory approval or changed.

Markets outside the United States diverged

International indexes also moved in opposite directions: France’s CAC 40 fell 0.7%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 2.4%, according to the same October 5 morning report. Those contrasting results underline that the U.S. market’s modest moves were not a universal direction for global equities.
