A U.S. sorghum shipment had been loaded for China after a leaders’ meeting, Mark Wilson, chairman of the U.S. Grains and BioProducts Council, told Reuters on November 6, 2025. Wilson said he did not know the cargo’s size. The report indicated a possible resumption of trade, but did not establish the shipment’s volume or prove that U.S.-China sorghum commerce had returned to normal.
What the shipment report says—and what it leaves unknown
Reuters reported Wilson’s account of one shipment loaded for China after the meeting. He told the agency: “I know after the meeting, one shipment of sorghum has been loaded and is coming over.” He added that he did not know its size. The report did not identify the exporter, Chinese buyer, vessel, or confirmed arrival date. Reuters
That makes this a report about an individual cargo, not evidence of a specific trade agreement or a durable policy change. Later USDA export totals describe aggregate shipments and do not identify this cargo.
Why China matters to U.S. sorghum producers
Sorghum is used in China as a corn substitute in animal feed and as an ingredient for baijiu, a distilled spirit. China has historically been central to the U.S. export market: USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) says it accounted for an average of 73% of U.S. sorghum exports across marketing years 2015/16 through 2024/25. - Easy Growing: Sweet sorghum seeds thrive in various climates and soil conditions, making them perfect for both novice and experienced gardeners to cultivate successfully
- High Yield Potential: Each pack contains 300 premium seeds that can produce abundant sweet sorghum stalks, offering excellent value for home gardeners
- Non-GMO Quality: Pure, naturally-sourced sweet sorghum seeds without genetic modifications, ensuring authentic and traditional crop characteristics
- Versatile Uses: Sweet sorghum can be grown for multiple purposes including syrup production, animal feed, or as an attractive ornamental grass in your landscape
- Garden Ready: Seeds are carefully selected and packaged to maintain optimal viability, ready for immediate planting in your home garden or outdoor growing space
Sorghum can substitute for corn in feed and ethanol uses, and its prices tend to track corn prices, according to USDA ERS. That link helps explain why changes in Chinese demand can matter beyond the grain’s own market.
What USDA’s later export data show
The quarterly figures published by USDA ERS show no reported U.S. sorghum exports to China in the first quarter of marketing year 2025/26, followed by nearly 54 million bushels in the second quarter. Those totals establish a substantial increase between the two quarters; they do not establish that the second-quarter volume was the shipment Wilson described. USDA ERS, Feed Outlook: May 2026

ERS forecast total U.S. sorghum exports of 225 million bushels for marketing year 2025/26 and 205 million bushels for 2026/27 in its May 2026 outlook. These are marketing-year forecasts, not confirmed final totals or figures for China alone. USDA ERS, Feed Outlook: May 2026
In the broader global market, USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) described China as the leading destination for sorghum imports, averaging 80% of global imports in recent years. FAS forecast Chinese imports of 7.5 million metric tons in each of marketing years 2025/26 and 2026/27. Those figures cover China’s imports from all origins and are not the size of the reported U.S. cargo. USDA FAS, Grain: World Markets and Trade, May 2026

Tariff context requires shipment-specific care
USDA FAS reported that China announced a 10% retaliatory tariff on U.S. sorghum on March 4, 2025, subject to the shipment and arrival timing conditions described in that report. USDA FAS, March 4, 2025
That dated announcement is relevant background, but it does not establish the tariff treatment of the cargo Wilson discussed or the complete rules that applied to every later shipment. The shipment report itself is not proof that tariffs were removed or that a trade-policy shift had taken effect.

How to read the signal
- Evidence of a cargo: Wilson told Reuters one shipment had been loaded after the leaders’ meeting.
- Evidence of subsequent trade: USDA ERS later reported nearly 54 million bushels of U.S. sorghum exports to China in the second quarter of marketing year 2025/26, after none in the first quarter.
- Not established: The cargo’s size or identity, whether it is included in a particular quarterly total, the applicable tariff treatment, or whether trade would continue at a sustained level.
Wilson said he hoped “that we can get back to normal on sorghum because that’s the number one thing.” His remark was an industry representative’s hope, not an official commitment on tariffs or exports. Reuters
