The increase does not mean mines produced more of every mineral: higher precious-metal prices lifted the total even as output varied by commodity.
What does “booming” mean in the USGS figures?
The headline measures estimated production value, not a uniform increase in physical output. A higher price can raise the value of what is produced even if the amount mined is flat or falling. USGS’s 2026 release attributes much of the increase to higher prices for precious metals, especially gold and silver.
The estimates cover U.S. nonfuel mineral production; the $112 billion figure does not include fuels such as oil, natural gas, or coal. USGS’s Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 reports 2025 estimates, and later releases may revise them.
Which parts of the industry gained value?
Metal production value rose faster than industrial mineral production value, while aggregates—the largest component highlighted in the release—gained value despite lower volume.

These are estimated production values, not household costs or company profits. They describe the value of mineral output at the industry level.
How did gold and silver lift the total?
Precious metals show most clearly why value and quantity should not be conflated. USGS reports that in 2025 the gold price rose 38%, while estimated U.S. gold production value increased 32% and estimated output fell 2%. For silver, the price rose 34%, estimated production value climbed 43%, and quantity increased 5%.

The comparison is not a claim that price changes mechanically explain each commodity’s entire value change. Rather, it shows that rising prices can drive a large increase in production value even when output is unchanged or lower.
Why isn’t every mineral booming?
Commodity-level results diverged. For example, global lithium prices fell 24% in 2025, and U.S. lithium production value fell 16%, while reported U.S. production quantity was unchanged. U.S. cobalt and nickel production quantities rose 50% and 34%, respectively. Those output gains occurred amid declining global prices for nickel and other minerals, so they do not imply that all domestic mineral values rose.

In short, the aggregate increase combines different price and output movements. Calling the entire sector a production-volume boom would overstate what the figures establish.

Minerals feed into industries throughout the economy, from construction materials to manufacturing and technology. USGS estimated the value of U.S. mineral-reliant industries at $4.09 trillion in 2025—more than one-eighth of the U.S. economy. That is a measure of downstream industries that rely on minerals, not the value of mining alone.

Supply also has a policy dimension. The final 2025 U.S. Critical Minerals List contains 60 mineral commodities. USGS reported that China was a major source for 14 of the 33 critical minerals for which the United States most depends on imports. This is a scoped finding about those 33 minerals, not a claim that China supplies 14 of every 33 minerals or that all U.S. mineral imports come from China.
The annual USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries covers domestic industry structure, government programs, tariffs, production, trade, prices, resources, reserves, and five-year statistics for more than 90 nonfuel mineral commodities. Its figures help distinguish a short-term change in value from production trends and import reliance.
