The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) attributed the market’s softness in part to uncertainty over global trade, tariffs, and the Farm Bill—but its statement is an industry assessment, not proof that any one issue caused the declines.
How much did U.S. farm equipment sales fall?
Association of Equipment Manufacturers figures reported by Successful Farming show 9,143 U.S. farm tractors sold in January 2025, down 15.8% from 10,860 in January 2024. Self-propelled combine sales fell more steeply: 97 units, compared with 460 a year earlier, a 78.9% decline. These detailed figures compare the same month in two years; Successful Farming also reported January 2025 sales were below the preceding year and the five-year average for 2020–2024. Successful Farming’s February 19, 2025 report does not give a detailed five-year-average count alongside those figures.

The figures are AEM-reported equipment sales as relayed by Successful Farming, not a census of every transaction. AEM describes its U.S. reports as monthly compilations of sales from the previous month. AEM’s market-share statistics page provides information about its reporting.
Which tractor segments had the largest declines?
Every tractor segment reported in the January comparison was down year over year. The largest percentage decline was in four-wheel-drive tractors; the smallest was in two-wheel-drive tractors under 40 horsepower.

The percentages describe changes in reported sales, not changes in the number of farmers seeking equipment or the overall size of the installed fleet.
Why did AEM connect the softness to tariffs and the Farm Bill?
Curt Blades, AEM senior vice president, pointed to uncertainty over global trade, tariffs, and the Farm Bill. He said: “The Ag industry continues to face uncertainties including global trade concerns, tariffs, and the lack of assurance that a farm bill provides. These uncertainties are reflected in the softness of the ag equipment market.” The quotation appeared in Successful Farming’s February 19, 2025 article.

The practical link is uncertainty around farm business decisions: when trade conditions and agricultural policy are unsettled, a farm may have less confidence in its future costs, revenues, or support programs. That can make a large equipment purchase harder to plan. But the cited sales figures do not measure how much each policy issue affected buying, nor do they separate those factors from other possible influences. AEM’s explanation should therefore be read as an attributed industry interpretation, not a causal estimate.

AEM’s later update reported U.S. agricultural tractor sales down 8% year over year in August 2026. For Canada, the same update reported tractor sales down 10.9% and combine sales down 42.6%. These are separate country and time comparisons; they should not be treated as a continuation of the January 2025 U.S. figures or as evidence that tariffs and Farm Bill uncertainty caused the later declines. AEM’s August 2026 update reports those figures.

What the sales figures can—and cannot—tell farmers and readers
- They show a sharp January 2025 year-over-year contraction. Combine sales had the steepest reported percentage decline, while every listed tractor segment also fell.
- They are a market indicator, not a forecast. The figures describe reported sales in specific monthly comparisons; the cited sources do not establish what future demand will be.
- They do not identify a single cause. AEM connected market softness to trade, tariff, and Farm Bill uncertainty, but the figures do not rank those factors or quantify their individual effects.
- Comparisons need their time period and geography. January 2025 U.S. figures, August 2026 U.S. tractor figures, and August 2026 Canadian figures are distinct snapshots, not interchangeable measures.
