That is a weekly production rate, not the amount produced during all of 2026. What the January record measures
The 1.20-million-barrel-per-day figure describes the rate of production during one reporting week. It does not mean the United States produced 1.20 million barrels each day throughout the year, and it is not a 2026 annual total. The reported rate was 9.2% higher than in the same week of 2025 and 13.7% above the three-year average for that week, according to Energy.AgWired’s account of EIA data analyzed by RFA.
The report also put the four-week average at 1.13 million barrels per day, up 1.4%. Converted to an annualized pace, that average equals 17.32 billion gallons. Annualizing a short-term rate is a run-rate calculation: it shows what output would amount to if that pace persisted for a year, not actual annual production.
Production, stocks and exports are different measures
Other indicators moved during the same week, but they describe different parts of the market and should not be mistaken for production:

- Stocks: Ethanol inventories rose 3.5% to 24.5 million barrels. Despite the weekly increase, stocks were 2.1% below the same week a year earlier and 0.9% below the three-year average.
- Exports: Estimated exports reached 119,000 barrels per day, a 5.3% increase from the prior week.
Production is a flow of newly made fuel; stocks are inventory held at a point in time; exports are shipments leaving the country. Their changes can differ because each tracks a separate activity.
How the weekly figure compares with later data
Weekly rates, monthly totals and annual totals cannot be compared as though they cover the same period or use the same unit. RFA’s live tables illustrate the difference: its latest weekly row in the reviewed data, for September 25, 2026, showed production of 1,007 thousand barrels per day, stocks of 1,002,330 thousand gallons, and gasoline demand of 364,938 thousand gallons per day. The September reading is a later weekly rate; the January monthly figure is a volume produced over a month; and the January 9 record is a rate for one week. A later weekly rate below the January peak does not contradict the record, nor can the monthly total be directly compared with a daily rate.
Historical output and production capacity
For a longer-term benchmark, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center reproduces EIA annual data through 2024. It lists U.S. ethanol production at 16,225 million gallons in 2024, up from 15,580 million gallons in 2023, and identifies the United States as the world’s largest ethanol producer. A separate measure is capacity: how much production facilities can make, rather than how much they actually produce. An April 1, 2026, Federal Register rule said domestic corn ethanol capacity exceeded 18 billion gallons as of late 2025 and estimated 2025 corn ethanol output at 16.4 billion gallons. What the data says about the causes
The January report establishes that output was unusually high for that week; it does not establish why the rate spiked. The Federal Register rule says future commercial production in 2026 and 2027 would be driven primarily by gasoline demand, with exports and demand for E0, E15 and E85 also relevant. That is broader market context, not a finding that any one of those factors caused the January record.

For readers assessing the figures, keep four distinctions in view: reporting period (week, month or year), unit (a daily rate or a total volume), benchmark (prior year or three-year average), and measure (production, inventory, exports or demand). Capacity is another separate concept from realized output.

Ethanol is blended into gasoline, so production and supply conditions are part of the broader fuel market. The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center says E10 was sold in all 50 states starting in 2010; E15 is a 15% ethanol blend available for light-duty vehicles of model year 2001 and newer; and flex-fuel vehicles can use blends up to E85.
