U.S. construction employment rose by 11,000 in September 2026, while wood product manufacturing employment increased by 2,100, according to preliminary payroll estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). These are changes in two separate industries—not a measure of construction output, wood sales, or jobs in a shared sector.
How many construction jobs were added in September 2026?
The BLS reported that construction employment increased by 11,000 in September. It characterized the change as little and said construction had added an average of 10,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months. The September figure is a one-month estimate; the average describes the longer trend.

Within construction, nonresidential specialty trade contractors added 12,000 jobs, according to the BLS summary. That subsector’s gain was larger than construction’s net increase, so changes elsewhere in construction offset part of it.

Wood product manufacturing employment rose by 2,100 in September, from 391,900 in August to 394,000 in September. Those employment levels are reported in thousands in the BLS table, and the monthly figures are seasonally adjusted. This is a payroll count for a manufacturing industry—not the amount of wood produced, sold, or used in construction.

The construction and wood product manufacturing changes are separate industry estimates. The BLS figures do not establish that wood-products hiring caused construction hiring or that the gains reflect a direct supply-chain relationship.
How does the construction figure compare with nonresidential construction?
The BLS’s rounded summary shows 12,000 added jobs in nonresidential specialty trade contractors. Separately, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), analyzing BLS data, reported a 16,100 increase across nonresidential construction, made up of 12,300 in nonresidential specialty trade, 2,600 in heavy and civil engineering, and 1,200 in nonresidential building. The ABC figures are its analysis and should not be substituted for the BLS’s rounded subsector figure.

These figures cover different scopes: total construction includes residential and nonresidential work, while the ABC total is for nonresidential construction. A gain in a subsector does not mean that every part of construction grew.

The BLS’s October 2, 2026 Employment Situation reported a 29,000 increase in total nonfarm payroll employment and an unemployment rate of 4.2 percent for September. The release draws on two monthly surveys: the household survey measures labor-force status, while the establishment survey measures payroll employment, hours, and earnings by industry. Construction and wood product manufacturing job counts come from the establishment survey; the unemployment rate comes from the household survey.

The BLS also revised total nonfarm payroll changes for earlier months: July was revised from an increase of 21,000 to a decrease of 10,000, and August from an increase of 162,000 to 133,000. Together, those revisions lowered the previously reported July and August total by 60,000. This revision amount applies to total nonfarm payrolls, not specifically to construction or wood products.

The September industry estimates are preliminary. As additional employer reports arrive and seasonal factors are recalculated, the BLS may revise them. The figures are national U.S. estimates, not a count for any individual state or local labor market.
