Several U.S. banks advertise debit-card designs with no separate design fee, but “free design” does not mean a free checking account or free replacement card. Eligibility, account status, card type, and order method vary. Here are examples and the conditions to verify before applying or requesting a new card.
How the free-design offers differ
The banks below describe different versions of customization: choosing from a gallery, uploading an image, or changing an existing card’s design. The offers are examples, not a complete nationwide directory; availability depends on qualifying for each bank’s accounts and cards.

What “free” covers—and what it may not
A zero design fee applies to customizing the card’s appearance under the bank’s stated conditions. It does not establish that the checking account has no monthly fee or minimum-balance requirement, or that card replacement and other services are free. Review the account and card disclosures separately. The First State Bank example also shows why it is worth checking for a stated fee and any account-based or promotional waiver rather than assuming personalization is always free.
Check these details before opening an account or ordering
- Eligible account and card: Confirm that the specific checking account and debit-card product qualify. Some banks exclude card types or limit the service to listed accounts.
- Required status: Check whether the card must already be active, accounts must be in good standing, or a minimum balance must be maintained.
- Design choices and image rules: Find out whether you can select only from a gallery or upload a photo or logo, and whether the bank’s approval rules limit what can be printed.
- Order channel and card timing: Confirm whether you must use online banking, the mobile app, a representative, a branch, or the bank’s service center. Treat any delivery window as an estimate unless the bank says otherwise.
- Separate charges: Ask whether the design fee differs from a replacement-card fee, and review checking-account fees and balance conditions.
- Geographic availability: These examples are U.S. bank offers; they do not establish availability nationwide or outside the United States.
When a card is advertised as customizable but not free
Do not assume a design offer is free because the bank promotes personalization. First State Bank lists a one-time $9.95 design fee per personalized card, with possible waivers tied to a promotion or deposit-account type. Check the current terms for the card and account you plan to use.

Is ICICI Bank’s Expressions debit card free?
The available ICICI Bank page does not support describing Expressions as free. Its fee sections list ₹749 plus GST for new cards from July 1, 2026, while an FAQ lists ₹599 joining and annual fees.
