Two prospectors found an 895 g gold nugget near Sandstone, Western Australia, after a metal detector signaled. PerthNow reported an estimated value of A$161,000 based on the Perth Mint spot price on 8 June 2025. That is a dated estimate—not a reported sale price or a current valuation.
Where was the nugget found?
The find was made near Sandstone, a town about 400 km north-west of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. PerthNow published the account on 11 June 2025, relaying information from Amalgamated Prospectors and Leaseholders Association State president James Allison, who said he knew the men. The prospectors were not named and had chosen to remain anonymous. PerthNow’s report gives the location and account.
How did they find it?
The men had prospected together for decades. After one of them retrieved a nugget weighing about one ounce, his companion continued scanning and the detector signaled again. They dug about 250 mm to recover the larger rock. The report also says they found another approximately one-ounce piece after the large nugget and continued prospecting the following morning.
The account identifies a metal detector but gives no brand, model or specifications. It therefore does not establish which detector was used or allow a meaningful comparison of equipment.

PerthNow attached the A$161,000 estimate to the Perth Mint spot price on 8 June 2025. It is a historical spot-price-based estimate as reported on 11 June 2025, not evidence that the nugget sold for that amount. The report does not provide an assay, purity measurement, transaction details or sale proceeds, so those cannot be inferred from the figure.
Gold prices change, and a spot-price estimate is not the same as the amount a particular buyer would pay for a physical nugget. The article does not establish a current value.
