Spruce Pine, North Carolina, is a globally important source of natural high-purity quartz (HPQ), and two companies—Sibelco and The Quartz Corp.—have produced advanced HPQ products in the area. But the material does not go directly into semiconductor chips, and Spruce Pine is not proven to be the world’s only source of quartz suitable for semiconductor manufacturing.
The more precise explanation is this: Spruce Pine supplies exceptionally pure quartz used to make fused-quartz crucibles. Those crucibles hold molten silicon while manufacturers grow the large silicon ingots that are later sliced into semiconductor wafers.
What Spruce Pine actually supplies
High-purity quartz is natural quartz with extremely low levels of contamination. The U.S. Geological Survey generally describes HPQ as containing fewer than 100 parts per million of total impurities, or at least 99.99% silica. Some ultra-high-purity products contain fewer than 10 parts per million of impurities.
That purity matters because even tiny amounts of elements such as iron, aluminum or titanium can contaminate equipment or affect the silicon-manufacturing process. The quartz is therefore valuable not simply because it is quartz, but because it can be processed into material with the chemical, thermal and optical properties required by demanding industries.

The quartz is used in several products, including:
- Fused-quartz crucibles for growing silicon ingots
- High-temperature components used in semiconductor and solar manufacturing
- Specialty glass and lamp tubing
- Fiber-optic and electronics equipment
The semiconductor connection is indirect but important. A simplified manufacturing chain looks like this:
- HPQ is extracted and processed.
- Manufacturers turn it into fused-quartz components, especially crucibles.
- Polysilicon is melted inside a crucible.
- A silicon crystal ingot is grown from the molten material.
- The ingot is sliced and polished into wafers.
- Chip manufacturers build semiconductor devices on those wafers.
So saying that North Carolina quartz is “necessary for semiconductor manufacturing” can describe its role in the equipment and wafer-production chain. Saying that the quartz is an ingredient in semiconductor chips is wrong.
Why Spruce Pine quartz is unusual
The deposits lie in the Spruce Pine pegmatite district, which extends across parts of Avery, Mitchell and Yancey counties. Pegmatite is a coarse-grained igneous rock that can contain quartz alongside feldspar and mica.
Mining the material is only the first stage. Operators crush, wash, scrub and sort the ore. The quartz then undergoes additional physical, chemical and thermal processing to meet the specifications of different customers and applications.

That combination of geology, processing experience, established facilities and customer qualification is what makes the area strategically important. A company cannot necessarily replace a qualified HPQ supplier by purchasing ordinary quartz from another location. The alternative source would need to produce the right purity, particle characteristics and performance consistently, then pass customer testing.
There are two companies, not simply “two mines”
The headline’s reference to two mines oversimplifies the local industry. The relevant producers are companies operating multiple facilities and processing operations, rather than two single pits that together represent the entire global supply.
| Company | Spruce Pine connection | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sibelco | Produces high-purity quartz sold under its IOTA brand. | Announced a $200 million expansion intended to double installed HPQ capacity at its Spruce Pine operation. It said the project was on track for completion in 2025. |
| The Quartz Corp. | Operates several U.S. locations in the Spruce Pine area and processes quartz for semiconductor, solar and fiber-optic applications. | It also has a quartz operation in Drag, Norway. On June 30, 2026, it announced the indefinite closure of one Spruce Pine production facility on Altapass Highway, with an expected loss of 20–30 jobs. |
The Quartz Corp. said its other U.S. locations were not affected by the Altapass closure. That update makes it especially risky to describe the area, without a date or qualification, as two mines operating normally.
Is Spruce Pine the world’s only source?
No defensible version of the claim should say that Spruce Pine is the world’s only producer of all quartz used in semiconductor manufacturing.

The latest USGS summary identifies Sibelco and The Quartz Corp. as U.S. HPQ-producing companies around Spruce Pine in 2025, but it does not identify them as the world’s only producers. Industry analysis has described the two companies as the only firms then capable of producing certain advanced and premium grades economically at scale. That is a much narrower statement than saying they are the only possible source of semiconductor-grade quartz.
Other distinctions also matter:
- Natural HPQ is not the same as every form of quartz used in industry. The supply picture depends on grade, processing method and application.
- “Semiconductor quartz” covers several products. Crucibles, tubes and other fused-quartz components may have different specifications.
- Economic replaceability is not the same as geological uniqueness. A competing source may exist but lack the capacity, purity, processing capability or customer approvals needed for immediate substitution.
- Market-share estimates vary. A precise claim such as “90% of the world’s semiconductor quartz” requires a current, transparent dataset and a clearly defined product category.
What Hurricane Helene demonstrated
Hurricane Helene caused both Sibelco and The Quartz Corp. to shut down Spruce Pine-area operations in late September 2024. The companies later resumed operations in phases, and Sibelco announced that it had restarted production and customer shipments.
The disruption showed how geographically concentrated the supply chain is. It did not prove that a storm would automatically stop semiconductor production worldwide. Reports at the time noted that inventories and recovery efforts helped prevent an immediate interruption to chip manufacturing.
This distinction is useful for investors and consumers. A concentrated supplier base can create a serious vulnerability, but the impact depends on inventory levels, customer contracts, alternative grades, transportation, qualification requirements and the time needed to restart facilities. A mine shutdown does not translate into an instant, one-for-one reduction in global chip output.

Why the issue matters financially
For semiconductor companies, the main risk is not the cost of the raw quartz alone. Quartz is a small part of the value of a finished chip, but a shortage of a highly specialized input can still cause delays if manufacturers cannot obtain qualified crucibles or other components.
Potential financial effects include:
- Higher prices for specialized HPQ and fused-quartz equipment
- Longer lead times for wafer manufacturers
- Increased inventory requirements
- Capital spending on alternate suppliers or additional processing capacity
- Temporary production delays if qualification of substitutes takes too long
For individual investors, the practical lesson is to avoid turning a dramatic supply-chain headline into a simple trade. The relevant questions are more specific: Which company supplies the material? What grade is affected? How much inventory do customers hold? Are alternative facilities qualified? Does a reported closure affect production, processing or only one location?
The same caution applies to claims about chip shortages and consumer prices. A disruption in one upstream material can be absorbed through inventory, supplier diversification or production adjustments. It may become significant, but the outcome cannot be inferred from the mine’s location alone.

FAQ
Are North Carolina’s Spruce Pine mines the only source of quartz for semiconductors?
No. Spruce Pine is a globally important source of natural high-purity quartz, and Sibelco and The Quartz Corp. have been major suppliers of advanced grades. However, the available evidence does not establish that they are the world’s only producers of every quartz product used in semiconductor manufacturing.
Does quartz from Spruce Pine go directly into computer chips?
No. It is primarily processed into fused-quartz components, particularly crucibles used to grow silicon ingots. Those ingots are sliced into wafers, which are then used to manufacture semiconductor chips.
What companies produce high-purity quartz near Spruce Pine?
Sibelco operates a Spruce Pine HPQ business under its IOTA brand. The Quartz Corp. operates multiple U.S. locations in the area and also has a quartz operation in Drag, Norway. The Quartz Corp. announced the indefinite closure of one Spruce Pine facility on June 30, 2026, while saying its other U.S. locations were unaffected.

Could a Spruce Pine shutdown cause an immediate global chip shortage?
Not necessarily. The 2024 Hurricane Helene shutdown demonstrated the supply chain’s concentration, but inventories and phased recovery helped prevent an immediate worldwide semiconductor interruption. The effect of a future shutdown would depend on inventories, affected product grades, customer qualifications and the availability of replacement capacity.
The Bottom Line
Spruce Pine is a critical, highly specialized source of natural high-purity quartz, not the proven “world’s only” source of all semiconductor quartz. The material is processed into crucibles and other fused-quartz components used to make silicon wafers. The strongest accurate claim is that two companies have made the area a dominant supplier of certain premium grades—and that this concentration creates a meaningful supply-chain risk.
