There is not enough comparable evidence to identify the four best-performing crypto ICOs of 2024 or to say which launches offered “maximum returns.” ICOs and token launches are not one standardized event, and the available official disclosures do not provide a like-for-like return ranking. Two well-documented 2024 cases—Wormhole’s W token and EigenLayer’s EIGEN token—show what launch information can tell investors, and what it cannot.
Why a reliable “best four” ranking needs more than project announcements
A launch can mean a presale, an airdrop, a token’s first public trading, or a protocol’s deployment. Those events occur at different times and do not provide a consistent starting price. A return comparison also needs a common measurement end date, comparable price data, and a clear account of circulating supply, unlocks, and valuation. The available disclosures for Wormhole and EigenLayer do not establish comparable realized returns for four projects.
That gap matters to anyone searching for past winners as a guide to future gains: selecting projects without a shared method is not a performance ranking, and historical performance would not establish future returns even if it were measured consistently. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on Initial Coin Offerings says whether a token offering involves securities depends on the facts and circumstances.
What the 2024 launch disclosures show
Wormhole: supply and a multichain governance plan
In February 2024, Wormhole published W tokenomics stating a maximum supply of 10 billion tokens and an initial circulating supply of 1.8 billion. Wormhole said the 82% initially locked would be released over four years. These are figures in the project’s own disclosure; they describe planned token supply and release, not independent confirmation of current circulating supply, unlock status, demand, or investor returns. Wormhole described W as available in ERC-20 and SPL formats. Its April 2024 roadmap set out a Solana launch and planned EVM expansion as part of a multichain governance direction. A roadmap records the project’s stated intent at publication; it does not prove that every planned step was later completed. The roadmap is available at Wormhole’s W launch roadmap.
EigenLayer: protocol deployment and a restaker distribution
Eigen Labs’ 2024 review says EigenLayer’s protocol mainnet deployment occurred in April 2024. In a separate April announcement, the Eigen Foundation described EIGEN as supporting cryptoeconomic security and announced a community stakedrop. The Foundation said 5% of the initial EIGEN supply was allocated to eligible restakers for Season 1. That allocation is a project-published distribution detail, not a return measure or a statement about the token’s current supply. The Foundation described EIGEN’s role this way: “EIGEN can be staked to AVSs to provide cryptoeconomic security for intersubjective faults, while ETH will continue to be staked to provide a deep pool of cryptoeconomic security for objective faults.” This is the Foundation’s explanation of the token’s intended function, not an independent assessment of its value or investment prospects.
How to compare token launches before considering an investment
For a meaningful historical comparison, define the measurement before choosing projects. Use the same rules for every token and distinguish a token’s launch mechanics from its market performance.

- Define what counts as a launch. State whether the comparison begins at a presale, airdrop, first verifiable public trading, or another event. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
- Choose one measurement period. Set the same start and end dates for every token, and identify the price source and method. A return figure without those details is difficult to interpret.
- Separate circulating and fully diluted valuation. A small amount of supply trading at a given price does not tell the same story as valuing the entire maximum supply at that price.
- Check unlocks and supply concentration. Review who received tokens, when locked tokens may become available, and whether the published schedule has changed. Project tokenomics are disclosures to verify, not a substitute for current supply data.
- Assess what the token does and what the offering disclosed. A stated protocol use or roadmap is not proof of adoption. Consider the project’s actual offering terms and the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
Legal and fraud risks to check
For U.S. investors, the SEC advises asking whether tokens are securities and whether an offering is registered or relies on an exemption. Its guidance is specific to U.S. investor protection and is not a determination that every token is a security or a conclusion about every jurisdiction. The SEC warns that fraudsters may promote ICOs with promised or guaranteed high returns, writing: “Fraudsters may entice investors by touting an ICO investment ‘opportunity’ as a way to get into this cutting-edge space, promising or guaranteeing high investment returns.”
The SEC’s May 29, 2024 crypto scam alert also describes misleading claims, including purported AI-enabled investment pitches. That alert is general fraud-awareness guidance; it does not establish that any particular project is fraudulent. Treat guarantees and unusually certain-return claims as warning signs, not evidence of likely performance.
