X launched Basic and Premium+ on October 27, 2023, adding two paid tiers to the existing Premium plan. At launch, Basic cost $3 per month in the United States and Premium+ cost $16 per month. Those prices are historical—not current.
As of August 18, 2026, X lists three consumer plans on the U.S. web: Basic at $3 per month or $32 per year, Premium at $8 per month or $84 per year, and Premium+ at $40 per month or $395 per year, before applicable taxes or payment-method fees. What X launched in 2023
The October 2023 rollout created a three-tier subscription lineup:

Contemporaneous reports from TechCrunch, 9to5Mac, and Engadget covered the launch. The platform was already moving from the Twitter and Twitter Blue branding to X and X Premium, so “Twitter Premium+” is best understood as a historical description rather than the current product name.

What Basic included
Basic was designed for people who wanted practical posting and customization tools without paying for a checkmark or reduced advertising.
- Editing posts after publication
- Longer text posts
- Longer video uploads
- Reply prioritization
- Text formatting
- Bookmark folders
- Custom app icons and other customization options
Basic did not include the blue verification checkmark, the stronger ad-reduction benefit associated with Premium, or Premium+’s ad-free positioning. Its value proposition was convenience—not status, guaranteed reach, or monetization.
X’s current support page still lists editing, longer posts and videos, text formatting, bookmark folders, custom app icons, and reply prioritization among Basic’s features. Availability can vary by country, platform, account eligibility, and later product changes.
What Premium+ included
At launch, Premium+ was the highest consumer tier. It included the existing Premium feature set, the highest level of reply prioritization, and an experience marketed as ad-free in the For You and Following feeds.

That “ad-free” description needs a qualification. X’s current documentation says occasional promoted content may still appear and distinguishes feed ad coverage from other promoted placements. Therefore, Premium+ should not be described as a guarantee that every commercial or promoted item disappears everywhere on X. See the Premium FAQ for the current limitations.
Features such as expanded Grok access, Radar Search, and Articles belong to later versions of the product and should not be treated as benefits confirmed in the October 2023 announcement.

This is a functional comparison based on X’s current documentation. Not every current feature was part of the 2023 launch, and X can change, add, or remove benefits.
Who should choose each plan?
Basic: best for editing and posting tools
Basic is the clearest fit if you mainly want an edit button, longer posts, longer videos, text formatting, or better bookmark organization. It is also the least expensive paid option and makes sense for casual users who are comfortable seeing ads.

Do not choose Basic if your main reason for subscribing is a blue checkmark, reduced advertising, creator-program access, or higher AI usage limits.
Premium: the middle-ground option
Premium is the relevant comparison for most regular users. It offers a broader set of features than Basic without the current $40 monthly price of Premium+.
It may suit users who want a checkmark, reduced ads, stronger reply prioritization, creator-related tools, and expanded media or AI features. However, payment alone does not guarantee verification or creator income. X reviews accounts for eligibility, and creator programs allow qualified users to apply rather than promising earnings.

Premium+ is mainly a power-user purchase. It may make sense if you spend substantial time on X, find feed advertising especially disruptive, want the strongest reply prioritization, or genuinely use its higher feature and Grok limits.

The cost is significant: $40 per month means $480 over 12 monthly payments, while the current annual price is $395 before taxes. That makes Premium+ a poor fit for casual users or anyone buying only for a symbol of credibility.
Stay with the free plan if none of those benefits matter
A subscription does not guarantee virality, authority, better moderation, freedom from spam, or creator payments. If you rarely use X or do not need editing, longer posts, ad reduction, or premium tools, the free tier may be the financially sensible choice.

Premium+ is no longer the $16-per-month product described in the 2023 launch coverage. X’s price-adjustment notice says new Premium+ subscribers began paying the updated price on February 18, 2025, with transition rules for some existing subscribers whose billing cycles began before March 22, 2025.

These figures are U.S. web prices. Your amount may differ because of location, taxes, currency, payment method, or app-store pricing. The web is therefore the cleanest baseline for comparison, but it is not a universal price promise.
How to subscribe
On the web, open X, use the left-side navigation, select Premium, choose a tier and billing period, and complete the account and payment steps. On iOS or Android, X’s FAQ says to open the profile menu and tap Premium.
X says subscribers must confirm a phone number. Premium and Premium+ checkmarks also require eligibility and review. Features may vary by operating system or country, and subscription terms allow X to change the service.

- “Ad-free” has limits: Premium+ is marketed as ad-free, but occasional promoted content or placements outside the covered feeds may still appear.
- Verification is not automatic: Paying does not by itself guarantee a blue checkmark.
- Reply prioritization is not guaranteed reach: A boost does not promise visibility, engagement, or virality.
- Creator tools are not guaranteed income: Eligibility to apply is different from receiving payments.
- Features change: Current benefits, including newer AI-related tools, should not be confused with launch-day features.
- Business plans are separate: X Premium Business and Premium Organizations have different features and are not part of this consumer comparison. See X’s organizational-plan information.
Bottom line for your budget
The original rollout created a simple split: Basic was the inexpensive feature bundle, while Premium+ was the expensive ad-avoidance and power-user tier. Today, Basic remains the low-cost choice for editing and longer posts; Premium is the broadest balance of features and price for many regular users; and Premium+ is justified only when its higher cost is outweighed by frequent use and a strong preference for reduced advertising or higher limits.
