In May 2025, a report attributed to Simon Jordan said Al-Sheikh was interested in Southampton or Millwall. Jordan reportedly described Southampton as a logical fit because of its stadium and scale. The same account said Jordan had suggested Sheffield Wednesday, but that the idea was rejected in favor of a southern club. No. In a separate report published on 23 May 2025, The New Arab said Millwall told the outlet there was “no substance regarding any takeover talks” and that “the club is not for sale.” That denial directly contradicts the suggestion of active talks; it does not turn the original account into a confirmed offer. Why was Sheffield Wednesday reportedly ruled out?
The May 2025 account said Wednesday had been suggested but rejected in favor of a southern club. It did not establish a reason beyond that preference, nor did it provide a direct statement from Al-Sheikh explaining the choice. The stadium-and-scale rationale in the account was associated with Southampton, not given as a verified explanation from the prospective buyer.
What happened to Sheffield Wednesday afterward?
Wednesday’s later ownership change was separate from the 2025 report. On 10 March 2026, the club’s administrators announced Arise Capital Partners as preferred bidder, naming David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin as members of the consortium. What would a football-club takeover require?
The EFL says an acquisition of control is subject to requirements from both the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator (IFR). Its official governance page describes the Owner, Directors and Senior Executives regime introduced on 5 May 2026. The assessment includes integrity, financial soundness, resources and competence, and requires evidence of the source and sufficiency of funding. The EFL says timelines vary by case. No. In a separate development reported in August 2026, BBC Sport reporting syndicated by Yahoo News Malaysia said Al-Sheikh withdrew from an attempted Derby County acquisition after agreement and regulatory approval.
