That was a proposal under consideration—not a completed repeal. Tesla was reported to favor ending the consumer credit, with Elon Musk arguing that competitors would be hurt more than Tesla.
What the November 2024 report said
On November 14, 2024, Ars Technica summarized Reuters reporting that the incoming Trump transition team was considering eliminating the federal clean-vehicle tax credit as part of a broader tax bill. InsideEVs also described the proposal as removing the consumer incentive through tax legislation. The reports concerned a possible policy change during the transition period; they do not establish that the credit was repealed or what its eventual legislative status became.
The credit was commonly described as worth up to $7,500, but that was a maximum for qualifying vehicles and buyers, not a guaranteed discount for every EV purchaser. The proposal was about ending the federal consumer incentive, rather than a change already in effect. (Ars Technica; InsideEVs)
Could Trump eliminate the credit without Congress?
No. The reports said ending the credit would require congressional action as part of tax legislation; the president cannot cancel the federal spending program by himself. A transition-team proposal is not law, and the credit would not disappear merely because the incoming administration wanted it removed. (Ars Technica)

Why Tesla was reported to support repeal
Although Tesla had benefited from federal EV incentives in the past, reporting said it supported ending the consumer credit. Ars Technica reported Musk’s view that repeal would be more damaging to rival companies than to Tesla. That is a strategic judgment attributed to Musk, not a published forecast quantifying how much Tesla or its competitors would gain or lose. (Ars Technica)
For consumers, repeal would remove a source of federal purchase support for vehicles that qualified under the rules then in effect. For automakers, the competitive impact would depend on which models and customers relied on the credit; the cited reports do not provide a model-by-model estimate. Tesla’s reported position therefore should not be read as evidence that repeal would have no effect on Tesla buyers, or that every competitor would be affected equally.

Why the advertised $7,500 was not universal
From 2023 onward, eligibility rules included domestic-production requirements as well as vehicle-price and buyer-income caps. The credit was therefore conditional: the vehicle and purchaser had to meet applicable requirements. The retrieved reports also noted that leasing could avoid some of those conditions, an important distinction between a direct vehicle purchase and a lease arrangement. The sources cited here do not provide a complete eligibility checklist for a particular model, buyer, or transaction date. (Ars Technica; InsideEVs)

The transition team’s reported proposals extended beyond vehicle incentives. Fast Company reported a call to claw back remaining funds from a Biden administration plan that allocated $7.5 billion for EV charging stations, with the money redirected toward battery-minerals processing, defense supply chains, and critical infrastructure. This concerned charging-infrastructure funding, a separate policy from the consumer tax credit. (Fast Company)
