On iPhone, open Wallet and tap Add Card (+). On iPad, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Add Card. For either device, you need a supported card from a participating issuer, a compatible device with current software, an Apple Account signed in, and a passcode or biometric authentication. Your bank or card issuer must verify the card before you can use it.
What Apple Pay is—and what you need
Apple Pay is Apple’s payment service; Wallet is where payment cards are stored on iPhone, while iPad’s setup is managed in Settings. Apple does not issue ordinary bank cards or decide whether a card can be added or a transaction approved. Those decisions belong to the card issuer. A card working with Apple Pay also does not guarantee that every merchant, network, feature, or country supports it. Apple explains its role and card requirements here.

- A compatible iPhone or iPad running the latest iOS or iPadOS available for it.
- An Apple Account signed in to the device, with two-factor authentication enabled.
- Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode.
- A supported debit, credit, prepaid, or other eligible card from an issuer that participates in Apple Pay.
- Apple Pay availability in your country or region. Check Apple’s current country-and-region list, since participating issuers and supported card types vary by market.
- Internet access during setup if the issuer needs to verify your identity or approve enrollment in its app.
Apple says users are generally required to be at least 13 in most regions, but the minimum age may be higher locally. Family-account and other feature restrictions can also apply. The labels below reflect Apple’s current setup instructions; wording can vary slightly by software version or region. See Apple’s setup requirements.
Set up Apple Pay on iPhone
- Open the Wallet app.
- Tap Add Card (+), choose Debit or Credit Card, then tap Continue.
- Add the card by holding it near the iPhone if that option is offered, scanning it with the camera, or choosing Enter Card Details Manually. Enter any information the camera or card scan did not capture.
- Follow any issuer prompts and accept applicable terms.
- Complete verification with your bank or card issuer. Depending on the issuer, this may involve a text or phone check, security questions, providing additional information, or confirming in the issuer’s app.
The card is ready when issuer verification is complete and it appears in Wallet. Some banks offer Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Apple Pay in their own apps; use that route if your issuer directs you there. Wallet may also offer Cards Found For You or Previous Cards, such as cards used on another Apple device or saved for AutoFill. A previously used card still needs approval for the current device. Apple describes issuer verification and card enrollment options.

Apple Pay on iPad is primarily for purchases in apps and on websites. Do not expect to hold an iPad to a store’s contactless reader: Apple’s instructions describe iPhone and Apple Watch for in-store contactless payments, while iPad is used to authenticate app and web purchases. Apple’s payment instructions distinguish these uses.
Use Apple Pay after setup
Pay in a store with iPhone
- At a contactless reader that accepts Apple Pay and your card’s network, double-click the side button on a Face ID iPhone. Authenticate with Face ID or your passcode. On a Touch ID iPhone, double-click the Home button.
- Hold the top of the iPhone near the reader.
- Wait for Done and a checkmark.
Pay in an app or on a website with iPhone or iPad
- Choose the Apple Pay button at checkout.
- Check the selected card and change it if needed. Provide billing, shipping, or contact details if requested.
- Confirm the payment. On a Face ID device, double-click the side button and authenticate; on a Touch ID device, use Touch ID or the passcode.
- Look for Done and a checkmark.
The merchant must accept Apple Pay as well as the particular card and payment network. Third-party browser checkout is more limited: Apple lists compatible iPhone or iPad hardware running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later, a participating merchant, and a compatible browser; the flow uses a code scanned by the device. Availability can vary by market. Review Apple’s payment and browser guidance.

Choose a default card or remove a card
The first payment card added to a device becomes its default. To change it:
- iPhone: Open Wallet, touch and hold a card, then drag it in front of the others.
- iPad: Go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Default Card, then select a card.
To remove a card, use the device-specific path:
- iPhone: Open Wallet, tap the card, tap the More button, choose Card Details, then tap Remove Card.
- iPad: Go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, tap the card, then tap Remove Card.
If you lose an iPhone or iPad, marking the device as lost turns off Apple Pay on that device. Apple’s card-management instructions cover defaults, removal, and lost devices.

Fix problems adding a card or making a payment
If Wallet says “Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” or “Card Device Limit”
Adding a card and approving a payment are issuer-controlled actions. Apple recommends checking device compatibility, current software, the supported region, passcode or biometric authentication, issuer participation, and Apple Account two-factor authentication. See Apple’s card-addition troubleshooting checklist.
Try these steps in order:
- Ask the issuer whether this specific card is eligible for Apple Pay and whether there is an enrollment or device limit.
- Install the latest available iOS or iPadOS update, then restart the device.
- Confirm that you are signed in to your Apple Account and that two-factor authentication is enabled.
- Make sure a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID is active.
- Try entering the card details manually instead of scanning or holding the card near the device.
- If the issuer offers it, try adding the card from its app.
- If the error remains, contact the issuer and give it the exact message. For a device-limit error, ask whether an old device registration must be removed; repeatedly deleting and re-adding the card may not resolve an issuer-imposed limit.
If a verification text or app approval does not arrive, confirm the contact details on file with the issuer and ask it to complete or reset verification. Apple cannot approve the card on the issuer’s behalf.

If the card is added but a payment is declined
A payment decline is different from a card-addition failure: the issuer decides whether to approve a transaction. Contact the bank or card issuer about a declined Apple Pay purchase. Apple’s declined-payment guidance.

You do not need Apple Cash to add an ordinary debit or credit card to Apple Pay. Apple Cash is a separate service available only in the United States, subject to its own eligibility rules. Transit cards are another Wallet category: supported transit systems may offer Express Mode, which can allow transit use without the usual authentication. Check Apple Cash and country availability and Apple’s transit-card and Express Mode information.

When a card or feature is unavailable, use the physical card, another eligible issuer card, the merchant’s own payment option, or the transit agency’s supported alternative. Signing out of iCloud or removing the device passcode can also remove payment cards from that device, so check the Wallet setup again if either changes.
