Donald Trump’s September 15, 2025, lawsuit against The New York Times, four of its reporters and publisher Penguin Random House sought $15 billion in damages. That figure was Trump’s demand, not a court award or a finding that he suffered losses. A judge later struck the original complaint over pleading-form problems; that procedural order did not decide whether the challenged reporting was defamatory.
Who Trump sued and what he requested
The case, Trump v. New York Times Company, No. 8:25-cv-02487, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. The defendants named in the initial complaint were The New York Times Company; reporters Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, Peter Baker and Michael S. Schmidt; and publisher Penguin Random House. What publications the complaint challenged
Contemporary reporting identified a book by Craig and Buettner and three New York Times articles as the publications at issue. The book is Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success. Trump’s complaint characterized the publications as false and damaging and alleged that they harmed his personal and business reputation, brand and financial prospects. Why the judge struck the original complaint
On September 19, 2025, U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday struck the original complaint, which contemporary coverage described as 85 pages long. The judge’s concern was how the complaint was presented under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 8, including its length and failure to provide the required concise statement. Striking a pleading for its form is not a decision that the reporting was true or false, nor a finding that Trump proved defamation. The order addressed the complaint’s compliance with pleading requirements; it did not resolve the underlying claims on their merits.
