At a business roundtable in Doha on May 15, 2025, Donald Trump said he had told Apple CEO Tim Cook that he wanted the company to build in the United States rather than expand production in India. His remarks document Trump’s account and preference—not an agreement by Apple to stop Indian production.

What Trump said in Doha

Trump made the comments while discussing India’s tariffs and an offer he said would remove them. He then described speaking with Cook: “we’re not interested in you building an India.” Trump added, “We want you to build here,” and said Apple would increase production in the United States. The remarks appear in the White House transcript of the May 15, 2025, Doha roundtable.

That transcript records Trump’s account of the conversation. It does not establish what Cook said in response or that Apple accepted a request to halt or limit production in India. A contemporaneous TechCrunch report characterized the comments as a request to stop expanding iPhone production in India and said Apple had not immediately responded to its request for comment.

What Apple announced about U.S. manufacturing

In August 2025, Apple announced an additional $100 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing, bringing its stated planned U.S. investment to $600 billion, according to the Associated Press. The announcement covered supply-chain and advanced-manufacturing work. AP explicitly noted it was not a full commitment to build iPhones domestically.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

A separate August 2025 White House transcript described increased U.S. supply-chain work for iPhones and a planned smart-glass production line in Kentucky. Those announcements indicate domestic manufacturing activity, but do not establish that complete iPhones would be assembled in Kentucky or elsewhere in the United States.

What was reported about iPhones sold in the U.S.

In May 2025 reporting on Apple’s fiscal second-quarter results, AP said CEO Tim Cook stated that the majority of iPhones sold in the United States in the then-current fiscal quarter would be sourced from India. That is a statement about a specific period in 2025, not a verified measure of Apple’s current production mix.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint., Etc.

The distinction matters: investment in U.S. suppliers or manufacturing does not, by itself, show where finished iPhones are assembled. The cited reporting does not establish Apple’s production split by country as of October 8, 2026, whether every announced investment was completed, or whether Apple changed its plans after the 2025 events.

What the record does—and does not—show

  • Trump’s position: He publicly said he wanted Apple to build in the United States rather than expand in India.
  • Apple’s response: The transcript does not establish Cook’s response or an Apple agreement to stop Indian production.
  • U.S. investment: Apple later stated a $600 billion U.S. investment plan, including an additional $100 billion announced in August 2025; AP said this was not a full pledge to make iPhones domestically.
  • India sourcing: AP reported Cook’s time-specific statement that India would source most U.S.-sold iPhones in the then-current fiscal quarter in 2025. It should not be treated as a current 2026 figure.
