Donald Trump promoted the $TRUMP meme coin on Jan. 17, 2025, shortly before his second inauguration. By the next morning, reports put its market capitalization near $6 billion—but that was a moment-specific estimate based on token price and circulating supply, not money the issuer had collected or a lasting valuation.
What is Trump’s meme coin?
$TRUMP is a cryptocurrency marketed as an official Trump meme token. In his Jan. 17, 2025 social media post, Trump wrote: “My NEW Official Trump Meme is HERE! It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING!” CBS News, reporting with AFP, said he unveiled it on Friday.
The project site describes the token as an expression of support for and engagement with the ideals and artwork associated with $TRUMP. It says the token is not intended to be an investment opportunity, investment contract or security. That is the project’s own description, not an independent legal determination. The official project site also says named entities receive trading revenue derived from trading activity.
When did the coin launch, and what did “near $6 billion” mean?
Trump promoted the token late Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. On Saturday morning, Jan. 18, its market capitalization was reported at approximately $6 billion. The figures were close but not identical because they reflected a volatile market at particular times:

Market capitalization is generally calculated by multiplying a token’s price by the number of tokens counted as circulating. It is a snapshot estimate: it does not mean that equivalent cash flowed into the project, that all holders could sell at the quoted price, or that the issuer realized that amount. Trading volume is a different measure; Business Standard separately reported $6.64 billion in trading volume as of Saturday morning.
How many tokens were released, and who held the allocation?
According to the official site, 200 million tokens were available on day one, with the planned total supply growing to 1 billion over three years. The site said CIC Digital LLC and Fight Fight Fight LLC collectively owned 80%, subject to a three-year unlock schedule. An allocation subject to unlocking is not proof that the tokens were sold or that their paper value became cash. CBS/AFP reported that Trump and Fight Fight Fight LLC had not detailed how much Trump made from the initial batch.

Why did the price move so sharply?
The market capitalization followed the token’s rapidly changing price. The Associated Press reported an initial price of $10, a rise to about $70 on Sunday morning, and a sharp fall after Melania Trump promoted her own token. Those later Sunday figures describe a different moment from Saturday’s near-$6-billion reports; they should not be treated as the same snapshot.
The launch also drew criticism over the potential for people seeking favor with the president to buy the token. Former Trump White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci told the AP: “Now anyone in world can essentially deposit money into bank account of President of USA with a couple clicks,” The quote expresses a critic’s concern; it does not establish that a particular buyer acted for that reason. The Associated Press account also documents the price volatility.

Is the $TRUMP coin an investment?
The official project site says the token is not intended as an investment. That disclaimer does not remove the market risks evident in its price swings. The available launch reporting also does not establish a complete, independently audited account of proceeds or resolve the token’s legal status. A near-$6-billion market cap should therefore be read as a historical market estimate, not a measure of issuer earnings or a guarantee of value.
