Yes, with an important qualification: Stack Overflow’s 2022 Developer Survey found that more respondents reported using Linux-based operating systems than macOS. It measured reported use, not each developer’s one primary computer, and Windows remained ahead of both. The result is evidence that Linux was a major developer environment—not proof that it has more developer users worldwide or has permanently overtaken Macs.
What the headline is based on
The claim traces to Stack Overflow’s 2022 Developer Survey, covered at the time as a finding that Linux ranked behind Windows but ahead of Mac. The survey asked respondents about operating systems they used personally and professionally. It allowed multiple selections, so the figures are shares of respondents selecting each option—not mutually exclusive slices of a market.
| Operating system or environment | Personal use | Professional use |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | 62.33% | 48.82% |
| Linux-based | 40.23% | 39.89% |
| macOS | 31.07% | 32.97% |
| Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) | 15.00% | 14.34% |
Because respondents could select more than one, a person using Windows at work, Linux in a virtual machine, and macOS at home could contribute to multiple categories. The percentages should not be added together or read as a ranking of respondents’ exclusive or preferred desktops. WSL was a separate response option; its figure does not establish how many respondents also selected Linux-based systems.
What the survey does—and does not—say
The defensible reading is narrow: among respondents to that survey, Linux-based systems had higher reported use than macOS. Stack Overflow’s survey is useful for understanding its responding developer community, but it is not a census of all software developers, a tally of computer sales, or a measure of worldwide operating-system market share. Participation was voluntary, and the results can reflect who chose to respond, where they live, and what “use” means to them.

- It measures reported use, not preference, primary device, hours spent, or exclusive use.
- “Linux-based” combines a family of operating systems, while macOS is one platform family.
- Use could mean a local installation, a secondary computer, a virtual machine, or another development environment; the percentages do not distinguish those contexts.
- The global result does not necessarily describe a particular country, company, or job role.
That makes “Linux had more reported use than macOS among 2022 respondents” accurate. “More developers worldwide use Linux than Mac,” “Linux is the dominant developer desktop,” and “Linux has more market share” go beyond what this survey establishes.
Why later survey results are not a simple update
Stack Overflow’s later surveys do not provide a clean, like-for-like confirmation that Linux remains ahead of macOS. In the 2023 survey, macOS was selected by 32.57% of respondents for personal use and 33% for professional use, while Ubuntu was selected by 27.28% and 26.69%, respectively. But Ubuntu alone is not the same category as the 2022 aggregate “Linux-based”; the 2023 presentation also listed other Linux distributions separately. WSL was reported at 16.87% for personal use and 15.68% for professional use.

The 2024 technology results describe Windows as the most popular operating system, but do not establish a directly comparable Linux-versus-macOS percentage in the published material cited here. In 2025, the question asks, “What is the primary operating system in which you work?” That primary-OS measure is different from the earlier multi-select use question. The 2024 results report 58,600 responses to the primary-OS question; the 2025 results report 31,569 responses to its primary-OS question.
There is therefore no sound basis in these figures for presenting the 2022 result as a verified 2026 ranking. Across the cited surveys, Windows remains the largest or most popular platform, while the Linux-versus-macOS comparison depends on year, categories, and question wording. The 2021 survey is another historical reference, not a substitute for reconciling those differences.

Why Linux is a natural fit for many development workflows
Linux is common in server and cloud environments, so developing on Linux can reduce differences between a workstation and the systems where software runs. Its shells, SSH, Git, package managers, compilers, scripting tools, and automation are also a strong fit for backend, infrastructure, security, embedded, scientific, and systems work. Developers who want broad hardware choice or close control over packages and the desktop may value Linux’s configurability as well.
These are practical reasons people choose Linux, not findings that Linux causes better productivity. The 2022 survey also illustrates the reach of tools used across development environments: Docker was reported by 63.72% of all respondents and 68.57% of professional developers in its developer-tools results; Visual Studio Code was reported by 74.48% in the IDE results. Those figures show tool popularity, not that respondents used those tools only on Linux.

Why developers continue to choose macOS
Native development for Apple platforms
For native iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS development, macOS is effectively required for the Xcode, Apple SDK, simulator, signing, and provisioning workflow. That does not mean every developer must own a local Mac: teams can use remote Mac infrastructure or CI services. They do need a compliant macOS build and signing path to ship native Apple software.
Integrated hardware and a managed workstation
Apple’s hardware and operating system are designed together, with consistent hardware targets and a Unix-like terminal environment. Developers may also prioritize laptop battery life, ergonomics, or commercial productivity, design, and communications applications. For an organization with established Mac-management and support practices, a standardized fleet can be more convenient than supporting many Linux distributions and device combinations. These benefits vary by workload and employer; they are not universal advantages for every developer.

Windows plus WSL makes the choice less binary
Many developers do not choose one operating system for every layer of their work. Windows can remain the managed host while WSL supplies Linux distributions and command-line tools; containers can define an application runtime, development can happen on a remote Linux server, and CI can run on Linux, Windows, or macOS. Production may run on Linux even when a developer’s laptop runs Windows or macOS.
WSL already appeared as a distinct and substantial response in Stack Overflow’s 2022 results. Its presence complicates a simple Linux-versus-Mac comparison: using Linux tools inside WSL is not the same claim as using a native Linux desktop, but it is part of how developers access Linux-compatible workflows.
When WSL fits
- Your employer requires Windows for identity, device management, Microsoft tools, or policy, but your projects need Linux shells and packages.
- Your team can document a consistent WSL distribution, filesystem location, networking setup, and container workflow.
Where WSL can add friction
- Project performance can suffer when files are kept on the less suitable side of the Windows/Linux filesystem boundary.
- Networking among Windows apps, WSL distributions, and containers can be confusing.
- Separate Windows and WSL installations can lead to duplicate tools, SSH credentials, Git settings, and line-ending problems.
- Corporate security tools may not inspect or manage WSL content in the way an organization expects.
WSL is not identical to a native Linux workstation, and its fit depends on hardware access, security requirements, and how well a team supports it.
Which environment fits your work?
| Work pattern | Practical starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Native Apple-platform apps | Mac, or access to managed Mac build infrastructure | Ensure the team has a macOS build and signing path for release. |
| Backend, cloud, DevOps, or infrastructure | Linux, Windows with WSL, or remote Linux development | Match local tools and containers to the team’s runtime and security setup. |
| Microsoft-centered enterprise | Windows with WSL where Linux tooling is needed | Standardize distributions, file placement, credentials, networking, and endpoint-security expectations. |
| Cross-platform web development | Any major desktop OS with consistent tooling | Use documented containers or other reproducible environments rather than relying on everyone’s laptop being identical. |
| GPU-heavy or specialized workloads | Evaluate the specific hardware or a remote environment | Check driver support, virtualization, performance, and access to required infrastructure before choosing a desktop OS. |
Linux suits teams that can support their chosen hardware, distribution, drivers, VPN, identity, and endpoint security. macOS is a strong fit when Apple-platform development or integrated hardware matters. Windows with WSL can bridge corporate endpoint requirements and Linux-oriented work. A remote workspace can help when local machines cannot handle builds or test environments, reproducibility matters, or Apple builds need to be centralized.

The headline is correct as a description of one result in Stack Overflow’s 2022 survey: respondents selected Linux-based operating systems more often than macOS for both personal and professional use. It is misleading if taken to mean Linux led Windows, that Linux was respondents’ primary OS, or that it has definitively surpassed macOS among developers in 2026. The useful takeaway is that Linux is a first-class development environment, while the best workstation depends on the work and on which layers of the development stack a team needs to control.
