Trump Directs Firing of Labor Statistics Commissioner After Weak Jobs Report

The BLS reported 73,000 July job gains and revised May and June down by 258,000. The White House cited the revisions in Trump’s move against Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, but they are not evidence by themselves of intentional manipulation.

On August 1, 2025, President Donald Trump said he had directed his team to fire Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, the same day the agency reported that U.S. employers added 73,000 jobs in July and unemployment was 4.2%. The BLS also sharply lowered its estimates for May and June. The White House cited those revisions as grounds for criticizing McEntarfer, but a revision is not, by itself, evidence that data were deliberately manipulated.

What the July jobs report said

The BLS’s August 1 Employment Situation release estimated that nonfarm payrolls rose by 73,000 in July 2025 and that the unemployment rate was 4.2%. The report also revised May and June payroll growth down by a combined 258,000. These are the estimates in the agency’s archived July 2025 release.

Month or measure Earlier estimate Revised estimate Change
July payrolls — +73,000 —
July unemployment rate — 4.2% —
May payrolls +144,000 +19,000 −125,000
June payrolls +147,000 +14,000 −133,000
May and June combined revision — — −258,000

The payroll figures are estimates of monthly change, not a count of every job created or eliminated. The table’s revisions compare the figures previously reported for May and June with their revised estimates in the August release.

Why the estimates changed

Monthly employment estimates are produced before complete information is available. As additional employer reports arrive, BLS incorporates them and revises earlier monthly estimates. FactCheck.org describes this routine process and notes that annual benchmarking later compares estimates with more complete employer records: its August 4, 2025 fact check.

Annual benchmark revisions can be large, but their size alone does not establish why the estimate changed or whether anyone acted improperly. FactCheck.org reported that the final adjustment for the year ending March 2024 was a downward revision of 589,000, smaller than the preliminary estimate of 818,000. It also cited historical downward revisions of 902,000 for 2009 and 514,000 for 2019. Those examples show that large revisions have occurred; they do not prove that any individual revision was harmless or fraudulent.

What the White House alleged

Trump announced that he had directed his team to fire McEntarfer on August 1. The White House’s same-day statement, titled “BLS Has Lengthy History of Inaccuracies, Incompetence,” argued that inaccurate estimates during her tenure justified the action and pointed to the May and June revisions, as well as earlier adjustments. That is the administration’s stated rationale, not an independent audit finding. Read the White House statement.

McEntarfer had been nominated in July 2023 and confirmed by the Senate in January 2024 by an 86–8 vote, according to Roll Call’s August 1 account.

What is established about claims of manipulation

FactCheck.org reported on August 4 that the administration had not produced evidence that McEntarfer or BLS staff manipulated the jobs numbers. Its account also says BLS announced the preliminary estimate of the 2024 benchmark revision in August 2024, before the November election. That timing matters when evaluating claims about when the revision became known; it does not, by itself, settle every question about the quality of a statistical estimate.

The distinction is important: the BLS documented revised estimates, and the White House used them to criticize the agency’s commissioner. The sources cited here do not establish intentional falsification. A downward revision can affect how readers understand recent job growth, but it is not proof of misconduct without evidence connecting the change to deliberate interference.

What the firing meant for the agency’s work

The announcement raised questions about confidence in official labor statistics, which households, businesses, policymakers and financial markets use to assess economic conditions. It did not itself change the July report’s published figures. The Associated Press reported that Acting Commissioner William Wiatrowski told staff, “This news is sudden, but our mission is unchanged – to provide high quality data to the nation.” AP also quoted McEntarfer as saying, “Our data moves markets because it is some of the most timely and accurate information on economic conditions that businesses and policymakers have.” Both quotations were reported by AP on August 12, 2025: its account of the staff response.
