Donald Trump announced the Official Trump meme coin, ticker $TRUMP, on the evening of January 17, 2025—three days before his second inauguration. He promoted the token in a post on his personal Truth Social account and directed followers to GetTrumpMemes.com.
The announcement created immediate interest and extreme price swings. But the token was not issued by Truth Social or Trump Media & Technology Group, and its headline valuation figures did not represent cash that Trump had personally collected.
What Trump announced
At 6:00 p.m. Eastern on Friday, January 17, Trump posted: “My NEW Official Trump Meme is HERE!” The post presented the token as a way to celebrate “WINNING” and used artwork of Trump raising his fist beneath the words “FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT,” a reference to his response after the July 2024 assassination attempt.
Some reports describe the launch as occurring on January 18 because of publication dates or UTC-based timestamps. For U.S. readers, the clearest description is that Trump announced it on the evening of January 17, three days before the January 20 inauguration.

The project was associated with two private entities: CIC Digital LLC, an affiliate of the Trump Organization, and Fight Fight Fight LLC. Truth Social was the platform used to promote the coin; available reporting does not identify Trump Media & Technology Group or Truth Social as the token’s issuer.
What $TRUMP actually is
$TRUMP is a meme coin—a speculative digital token built on the Solana blockchain. It does not have its own blockchain like Bitcoin or Ethereum, and owning it does not give a holder an ownership stake in the Trump Organization, Trump Media, or the U.S. government.
The project set a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. Approximately 200 million, or 20%, were initially released. The remaining 80% was allocated to creators and Trump-affiliated entities and was scheduled to unlock over three years.

The project website said CIC Digital LLC and Fight Fight Fight LLC collectively owned 80% of the supply and would receive trading-related revenue. It also described the Trump Memes as expressions of support, not an investment opportunity, investment contract, or security. That is the project’s stated position, not a definitive legal ruling about the token’s status.

$TRUMP briefly traded above $75 on January 19, 2025. Reports put its circulating market capitalization near $15 billion at that point. Other figures were much larger because they calculated a fully diluted valuation—the theoretical value of all 1 billion tokens at the prevailing market price, including tokens that had not yet entered circulation.
These two calculations answer different questions:
- Circulating market capitalization: the token price multiplied by the number of tokens currently circulating.
- Fully diluted valuation: the token price multiplied by the maximum supply, including tokens scheduled for future release.
A large market-capitalization or valuation number does not mean the issuer has received that amount in cash. It also does not mean every holder could sell at the quoted price. If a large holder sells into a relatively thin market, the price can fall quickly. The widely reported billions of dollars linked to Trump’s holdings were primarily paper valuations, not confirmed realized proceeds.

What the launch meant for buyers
Meme coins generally depend heavily on attention, momentum and community enthusiasm rather than cash flow, earnings or a traditional business model. In this case, the connection to a sitting president created an unusually powerful publicity event, but it did not remove the normal risks of a highly speculative token.

- Concentration risk. When 80% of the maximum supply is held by affiliated entities and subject to future unlocking, new supply can affect the market price.
- Liquidity risk. A quoted price is not a guarantee that a buyer can sell a large position at that price.
- Scams and impersonation. High-profile launches attract fake websites, counterfeit tokens, phishing links and fraudulent “claim” offers.
- Fees and tax reporting. Solana network fees, exchange fees and taxable gains or losses can affect the real result of a trade.
- Legal and regulatory uncertainty. A website disclaimer cannot by itself settle how regulators or courts classify a token.

- Confirm that the asset is the Solana-based
$TRUMPtoken and check the contract address through a reputable source. Ticker symbols alone are not unique. - Read the token allocation and unlock information. A low circulating supply can make the price look stronger than a fully diluted calculation would suggest.
- Check the exchange’s withdrawal, deposit and trading fees before placing an order.
- Never share a wallet’s seed phrase or private key, and never approve a transaction merely to “verify” a wallet.
- Decide in advance how much money could be lost without affecting rent, emergency savings, debt payments or other financial priorities.
Investors should also keep records of purchase prices, sale prices, fees and transfers. Cryptocurrency tax treatment depends on the transaction and the taxpayer’s circumstances, so a tax professional may be appropriate for frequent trading or substantial gains.

Melania Trump launched a separate token, $MELANIA, on January 19, 2025, one day before the inauguration. It was not the same asset as $TRUMP.
