That sounds cheaper—and it can be if you use Word, Excel and PowerPoint for several years—but the financial calculation has changed: Microsoft no longer promotes Office 2021 as its current retail edition, and support ends on October 13, 2026.
Legitimate unused retail stock may still exist, but compare its price with Office 2024 before buying. Also check which apps you need, whether you require commercial-use rights, and how long you expect the Mac software to remain supported.
Office 2021 for Mac price
At launch in the United States, Microsoft priced the two consumer editions as follows:

Both licenses cover one PC or Mac. The prices above are the original U.S. launch prices, not necessarily what you should expect to pay today. Microsoft’s current U.S. Store promotes Office Home & Business 2024 at $249.99, rather than offering Office 2021 as its current retail product. A retailer may still have legitimate, unused Office 2021 inventory, but a low price from an unknown key marketplace is not automatically a bargain.

For a personal-finance comparison, the key question is how long you will use it. A $149.99 license used for four years costs about $37.50 per year before considering the value of updates and support. However, Office 2021’s support deadline means a newly purchased copy has a much shorter supported life than its “one-time purchase” wording may suggest.
What you get with each Mac edition
Home & Student 2021
This is the lower-cost choice if you need the core desktop applications for personal projects, schoolwork or household documents:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- OneNote
It does not include Outlook, and Microsoft’s license does not permit commercial use. If you plan to use the apps for paid freelance work, a business, or an employer’s operations, Home & Student is the wrong edition even if its applications meet your technical needs.
Home & Business 2021
Home & Business adds Outlook and permits home or work use. It remains a one-Mac license, not a household or multi-device subscription.

Neither Mac edition includes Publisher or Access. Those are Windows-only Office applications and are not part of the Mac suites.
Office 2021 features on Mac
Office 2021 is not an old, stripped-down version of Office. It includes several useful upgrades over earlier perpetual editions.

These features make Office 2021 a substantial upgrade for someone using Office 2016 or an older version. They do not make it equivalent to Microsoft 365. Microsoft 365 continues to receive feature releases; Office 2021 has a fixed feature set and does not receive the subscription service’s ongoing additions.
What the one-time purchase does not include
“One-time purchase” describes the licensing model, not a promise of permanent updates or a complete Microsoft ecosystem. Office 2021 does not include:
- A Microsoft 365 subscription
- 1 TB of OneDrive storage
- Exchange Online or SharePoint Online services
- Continuous feature upgrades
- Microsoft 365 subscriber benefits and subscription-only creative content
You can continue using a purchased version after support ends, but Microsoft will stop providing technical support, bug fixes, security fixes and Office 2021 software updates on October 13, 2026. The applications may still open and edit files after that date, but using unsupported software can expose you to security and compatibility problems. Do not treat the license as including “lifetime updates.”
Mac requirements
Office 2021 for Mac requires:

The supported macOS window moves as Apple releases new major versions. A Mac that met the requirements when Office 2021 launched may eventually fall outside Microsoft’s supported three-version range. Check the Mac’s version under Apple menu > About This Mac before buying.
How to buy a legitimate copy
If you find Office 2021 for sale, buy only an unused retail license from Microsoft, an authorized retailer or legitimate remaining inventory. Microsoft warns that keys sold outside official stores or authorized partners may be invalid. A key can be counterfeit, already redeemed, region-restricted or intended for a different licensing program.
- Confirm that the listing says Office Home & Student 2021 or Office Home & Business 2021 for Mac, rather than a volume, developer or Windows-only license.
- Check whether you need commercial-use rights and Outlook.
- Go to
office.com/setuporMicrosoft365.com/setup. - Sign in to the Microsoft account you intend to keep using.
- Enter the 25-character product key.
- Complete redemption. The key becomes associated permanently with that Microsoft account.
The account matters more than the physical key after redemption. You will use it for later downloads, reinstalls and license management. Save the purchase receipt and record the account used; do not assume another account can activate the same license later.

How to install Office 2021 on a Mac
- After redemption, open the Microsoft account dashboard and select Office apps.
- Find the purchased Office product and select Install.
- Open Finder > Downloads.
- Double-click the downloaded
.pkginstaller. - Select Continue, review the license agreement, select Continue, then select Agree.
- Choose the installation type and select Continue.
- Review the disk-space requirement or installation location and select Install.
- Enter the Mac administrator password if requested, then select Install Software.
- Select Close when installation finishes.
- Open Word, Excel or another Office application and choose Get Started if the activation screen appears.
To install only some applications, choose Customize in the installer and deselect the apps you do not need. That can save some disk space, although it does not change the license price.
Activation, updates and common problems
Office normally begins activation when you open an application after installation. If no sign-in prompt appears, open an Office application and select File > New from Template… > Sign In. Use the Microsoft account associated with the redeemed license.
Office 2021 is not permanently offline software. Internet access is required for redemption, activation and periodic reactivation. Plan for occasional connectivity even if you mainly work on local files.
For updates, open Word, Excel or another Office application and select Help > Check for Updates from the macOS menu bar. Select Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date if you want automatic updates, or select Update to install available updates manually. If the command is missing, Microsoft says to install or run the latest Microsoft AutoUpdate tool.

Office 2021 versus Microsoft 365 and Office 2024
Office 2021 is most defensible when you want desktop applications, dislike recurring subscriptions and can obtain a legitimate key at a sensible price despite the approaching support deadline. It is less attractive when you need current features, cloud storage, multiple devices, or a long supported lifespan.
Microsoft 365 spreads the cost over recurring payments but includes ongoing feature updates, subscription services and—depending on the plan—OneDrive storage and use across multiple devices. Office 2024 is the newer one-time-purchase alternative. Since Microsoft lists Office Home & Business 2024 at $249.99 in its U.S. Store, compare that current product directly with any Office 2021 listing instead of assuming the older version is automatically cheaper or better value.

Is Office 2021 for Mac still available?
Microsoft’s current U.S. Store promotes Office 2024 rather than Office 2021. Office 2021 may still be available as legitimate unused retailer inventory, but verify the seller and product key carefully.
Does Office 2021 for Mac include Outlook?
Only Office Home & Business 2021 includes Outlook. Home & Student 2021 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, but not Outlook.
