Re:

Treasury Bills vs. Savings Accounts: Which Is Better for Short-Term Savings?

Treasury bills can lock in a term yield, while savings accounts provide easier access. Compare taxes, timing, rate changes and account terms before choosing.

Neither option wins for every saver. A high-yield savings account is usually the better home for money that may be needed without warning because withdrawals are built into the account. A Treasury bill can be the better fit when you know the date you will need the money and can hold the bill to maturity. Compare the actual after-tax yield, access rules, rate certainty and work involved—not just a headline rate.

The right choice can change as rates, taxes and your timeline change. The framework below shows how to decide without assuming that Treasury bills always pay more or that a savings account is always safer.

The short answer

Question Savings account Treasury bill
When can you use the money? Withdraw under the account’s procedures and terms. At maturity; earlier access generally means selling through a brokerage.
How is the return set? The APY can change when the bank changes its rate. The purchase economics are set for the term if you hold to maturity; reinvestment is at a future rate.
What is the term? No fixed maturity; the account remains open while you meet its terms. Short maturities of one year or less, including 4-, 6-, 8-, 13-, 17-, 26- and 52-week bills.
How is interest taxed? Bank-account interest is taxable income. Federally taxable, but exempt from state and local income taxes.
What is the main operational burden? Check variable-rate terms, minimums, tiers, caps and fees. Choose a maturity, arrange the purchase and decide whether to take or reinvest the proceeds at maturity.
What protects the balance? Confirm that the institution is FDIC-insured and review your ownership category and current coverage rules. A direct obligation of the U.S. government; selling before maturity exposes you to market-price movement.

For an emergency reserve or an uncertain spending date, the account’s dependable access usually outweighs a modest yield difference. For money earmarked for a known date, a bill maturing before that date can provide a more predictable outcome.

What a Treasury bill is

Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government securities that mature in one year or less. The Treasury sells a bill at face value or at a discount. At maturity, it pays the face value; the difference between what you paid and the face value is the interest.

Available maturities

The Treasury’s daily rate page lists quotations for current 4-, 6-, 8-, 13-, 17-, 26- and 52-week bill tranches. Those are secondary-market quotations, not promises of what a future auction will pay. A bill’s exact term matters because the rate environment can change between maturities.

What happens at maturity

If you hold the bill to maturity, the government pays the stated face value. You then decide whether to use the cash or buy another bill. The rate on that next bill is unknown until you make the new purchase. A ladder can spread those decisions across several dates, but it cannot lock in future rates.

How a savings account works

A savings account is a deposit account designed for ongoing access rather than a fixed end date. Its APY is generally variable, so the bank can change it. Read the account’s current terms for minimum balances, balance tiers, caps on promotional rates, fees and any introductory period. A high advertised APY may apply only to a particular balance range or for a limited time.

The FDIC reported a 0.39% national savings deposit rate in March 2026. That is a national benchmark based on the FDIC’s stated methodology—not a best-offer APY and not necessarily representative of online high-yield accounts. Compare the actual account you can open with the current Treasury yield for the matching period.

Start with the date you need the cash

The date is uncertain

Use an account for money that could be needed for a medical bill, job interruption, urgent repair or another unpredictable expense. You can withdraw under the account’s procedures without having to sell a security at whatever price the market offers that day. Keep enough immediately accessible to cover the period in which a bill sale or bank transfer could create friction.

The date is known

Suppose a tuition payment, tax bill or home closing is due in six months. A bill that matures before the payment date can match the liability. Compare its current auction investment yield or relevant secondary-market yield with the account’s APY after taxes and fees. Leave a cushion for the payment date rather than choosing a maturity that ends on the same day the money is due.

You have several known dates

A bill ladder divides the cash among maturities so that a portion comes due periodically. For example, you could assign separate amounts to 13-, 17-, 26- and 52-week bills when those dates fit your obligations. A ladder reduces the risk that all of your cash is locked up at once, but it adds record-keeping and reinvestment decisions. It does not guarantee a particular future yield.

Compare yields on the same basis

Why the Treasury quotes can look different

The Treasury publishes both a bank-discount rate and a coupon-equivalent, or investment, yield. The bank-discount rate uses a 360-day year and the bill’s face value. The coupon-equivalent yield uses your purchase price and a 365- or 366-day year. The coupon-equivalent figure is generally the closer comparison to an annualized deposit yield, although the actual holding period and compounding assumptions still matter.

For a bill with face value F, purchase price P and d days to maturity, the simplified annualized measures are:

  • Bank-discount rate: ((F − P) ÷ F) × (360 ÷ d).
  • Coupon-equivalent investment yield: ((F − P) ÷ P) × (365 or 366 ÷ d).

Use the investment yield when comparing with an APY, then account for tax treatment, fees and what you will do with the money when the bill matures.

Illustrative calculation

The following is an educational example, not a current quote. Assume a 182-day bill has a $10,000 face value and costs $9,780. The $220 difference is the pretax interest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bank-discount rate: ($220 ÷ $10,000) × (360 ÷ 182) = approximately 4.35%.
  • Coupon-equivalent yield: ($220 ÷ $9,780) × (365 ÷ 182) = approximately 4.51%.

If a savings account advertises a 4.40% APY, those figures are not automatically interchangeable: the bill calculation uses a simple annualization for one holding period, while APY incorporates compounding. Compare the dollars you expect to receive over the same number of days, not only the percentage labels.

Check the account’s real APY

Before comparing, verify:

  • Whether the quoted APY applies to your entire balance or only a tier.
  • Whether a minimum balance, monthly fee or transaction condition applies.
  • Whether the rate is promotional and when it ends.
  • Whether the bank can change the rate at any time under the account terms.
  • Whether the account has a balance cap for the advertised rate.

Taxes can change the winner

The IRS treats interest from a bank account as taxable income. Treasury-bill interest is also subject to federal income tax, but it is exempt from state and local income taxes. The value of that exemption depends on where you live and your personal tax situation.

A simplified after-tax illustration

Assume both choices produce $220 of pretax interest, you are in a 24% federal bracket and your state income-tax rate is 5%. Ignoring timing, deductions and other complications:

Federal tax at 24% State tax at 5% Approximate interest kept
Treasury bill $52.80 $0 because of the state/local exemption $167.20
Savings account $52.80 $11.00 $156.20

This example shows why a lower pretax bill yield can still compete with a deposit in a taxing state. If your state has no income tax, or if your circumstances differ, the gap may disappear. Use your own marginal rates and confirm how your tax authority treats the income.

Liquidity and early access

Withdrawing from savings

A savings account is built for withdrawals, subject to the bank’s identity checks, transfer procedures, minimums, fees and other account terms. Confirm how long an external transfer normally takes for your institution and keep a separate immediately available balance if a delay would create a problem.

Getting cash from a bill before maturity

A bill pays at maturity. If you need the money sooner, you generally must sell it through a brokerage that supports Treasury trading. The sale price can be higher or lower than your purchase price because market yields move. Intermediary processing and settlement timing vary; there is no universal early-sale timetable established here. Ask the brokerage about its process, fees and the types of bills it supports before relying on a sale for an emergency.

That market-price risk is different from the maturity promise. Holding to maturity gives you the face-value repayment; selling early converts the bill into a market transaction.

Rate certainty and reinvestment

What is fixed

When you buy a bill, the price and maturity determine the interest you will receive if you hold it to maturity. A savings account’s APY can rise or fall while your money remains deposited. A bill therefore offers term certainty, while a savings account offers access and ongoing flexibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is not fixed

Reinvestment is not guaranteed. When a bill matures, the next bill may offer a lower or higher yield. A savings account may also have a different APY by then. Do not treat a current bill yield as a forecast for every future purchase.

Protection and institutional risk

Deposits

Check that the savings institution is FDIC-insured. Confirm the ownership category and current coverage rules in FDIC guidance, especially if you already hold deposits at the same institution. Specific coverage limits were not re-verified for this comparison, so do not rely on an old limit from another article.

Treasury securities

Treasury bills are obligations of the U.S. government. That describes the issuer’s repayment obligation, not a guarantee that an early sale will preserve your purchase price. Market movements, brokerage procedures and the decision to sell before maturity still matter.

How to choose a savings account for short-term cash

  1. Define the access requirement. Decide how much must be available immediately and how much could remain untouched for several months.
  2. Verify insurance and ownership. Confirm FDIC insurance and determine how your existing balances fit the applicable ownership category.
  3. Read the complete rate terms. Record the APY, balance tiers, caps, minimums, fees, promotional end date and variable-rate language.
  4. Estimate after-tax interest. Apply your federal and state/local tax rates to the expected interest rather than comparing headline APYs alone.
  5. Test the withdrawal path. Check how you would move money to the account you use for bills and whether any fee or delay would matter.

How to evaluate and buy a Treasury bill

  1. Set the spending date. Choose a maturity that ends before the date you need the cash, with a margin for processing and scheduling.
  2. Choose the purchase route. Compare a Treasury auction with a secondary-market purchase. Auction results and secondary-market quotations are different observations; neither should be presented as a guaranteed future rate.
  3. Compare the investment yield. Use the coupon-equivalent or investment-yield convention when comparing with an APY, then adjust for taxes and any brokerage costs.
  4. Confirm the amount and maturity. Make sure the face value and maturity date fit the liability, and keep separate cash for expenses that could arise earlier.
  5. Decide what happens at maturity. Arrange to receive the proceeds or reinvest them. Reinvestment will use the rate available at that time, not today’s rate.
  6. Plan for an early-sale scenario. If an emergency could force a sale, confirm the brokerage’s trading, pricing and processing procedures before buying.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing a discount rate directly with an APY. The day-count convention and denominator differ; use the investment-yield measure and same-period dollars.
  • Using a stale Treasury yield. Bill rates change. Check the current Treasury auction results or daily rate table instead of copying an old number.
  • Assuming a national deposit average is an offer. The FDIC’s 0.39% March 2026 figure is a benchmark, not a quote from a particular bank.
  • Ignoring state taxes. The Treasury exemption can matter in a taxing state but offers no benefit where there is no state or local income tax.
  • Locking up emergency money. A bill maturing next month still may not solve a bill due tomorrow. Keep uncertain needs in an accessible account.
  • Forgetting maturity administration. A bill that matures while you are traveling or between bank accounts can create an avoidable cash-management problem.
  • Assuming a ladder eliminates rate risk. It spreads maturity dates; it does not lock in the rates on future purchases.
  • Calling one option universally safer. Deposit insurance, government obligations, market prices and access risks are different dimensions.

A practical decision checklist

Choose the savings account when most of these statements are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You cannot predict the withdrawal date.
  • You may need the money immediately.
  • You prefer not to manage maturities or reinvestment.
  • The account’s net, after-tax return is close enough to the bill alternative.
  • You have verified FDIC insurance and acceptable account terms.

Choose a Treasury bill when most of these statements are true:

  • You know when the money will be needed.
  • You can hold the bill through maturity.
  • The maturity fits before the spending date.
  • The investment yield remains attractive after federal and state/local tax effects.
  • You are comfortable arranging the purchase and handling maturity or reinvestment.

If the answers split evenly, divide the cash: keep the uncertain portion in savings and match only the dated portion to bills. That hybrid approach preserves access without forcing every dollar into the same product.

Bottom line

A savings account is generally the more practical choice for short-term money with an uncertain use date. Treasury bills can be compelling for a known date when you can hold to maturity, especially if the state-tax exemption improves the after-tax result. Recheck the current bill yield, the account’s full terms and your tax position each time; the better option is the one that delivers the needed access and net return for your specific timeline.
