Boarding is usually simpler than an airport check-in, but baggage, seating, food, Wi-Fi, and station services vary by route.
1. Arrive early enough to find your train
Amtrak recommends arriving 30 minutes before departure. Use that time to check the station and train information, find the boarding area, and ask staff for help if you are unsure where to go. Station layouts and boarding procedures can differ. Amtrak’s first-trip preparation guide has additional planning advice.
2. Keep your ticket accessible
You can use the Amtrak app to display your ticket, check real-time train status, and manage a reservation. Have the ticket ready for onboard checks; a conductor can answer questions once you are aboard. Amtrak’s passenger identification information explains its ticket and identification requirements.
3. Buy your ticket before boarding when required
Amtrak advises passengers boarding at a staffed station or a station with a ticket kiosk to purchase their ticket before boarding. Buying onboard may include a service fee, according to Amtrak’s passenger identification page. Check your departure station’s options rather than assuming you can buy a ticket from the conductor.

- The Lake Shore Limited is an overnight Amtrak intercity passenger train that runs between Chicago and either New York City or Boston via two sections east of Albany. The train began service in 1975; its predecessor was Amtrak's Chicago–New York Lake Shore, which operated during 1971–72.
- It is named for the New York Central (NYC) Lake Shore Limited, which was discontinued in 1956, and uses the NYC's former main line, part of which is now the Empire Corridor.
- Metal pin with hard enamel print. Military clasp. 1-1/4"W.
- Clutch-back closure
- Made in the USA
4. Know the standard carry-on limits
Amtrak’s terms of carriage set the standard allowance at one personal item and two carry-on items per passenger, subject to service-specific exceptions.
| Bag type | Maximum weight | Maximum dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Personal item | 25 lb | 14 × 11 × 7 inches |
| Carry-on item | 50 lb | 28 × 22 × 14 inches |
These are policy limits, not a guarantee that every train has identical storage arrangements. Review the current terms and any exceptions that apply to your service before packing.

5. Check whether your trip offers checked baggage
Where checked-baggage service is available, Amtrak says each passenger may check two bags free. Not every train or station offers the service, so confirm it for both ends of your trip before relying on checked luggage. The baggage terms set out the applicable rules.
6. Stow carry-ons without blocking the train
Use overhead racks, space under your seat, or designated baggage areas. Keep aisles and vestibules clear, and do not use an empty seat as a luggage rack. The Amtrak carriage terms describe baggage limits and handling.

7. Check the seating and accommodation on your train
Seat arrangements and available classes depend on the route and equipment. Do not assume a seat type or accommodation you saw on another Amtrak train will be offered on yours. Check the options shown for your itinerary and the relevant first-time rider guidance and onboard information.
8. Plan for limited connectivity
Amtrak Wi-Fi is available on select trains and at select stations. Amtrak describes onboard Wi-Fi as suitable for general web browsing, but it does not support streaming music or video or large downloads. Save files and entertainment for offline use before you leave. See Amtrak’s Wi-Fi information for details.

9. Bring food or check what is offered
You may bring your own food. Some trains offer snacks, meals, and beverages in a café or dining car, but food service and menus are not universal. Check the onboard options for your route instead of counting on a particular car or meal. Amtrak’s preparation guide and onboard information explain the available services.
10. You can move around, but be considerate
Amtrak’s first-trip guide describes the ability to move around during the journey. A Quiet Car may be available on some corridor trains, but it is not a feature to assume on every service. Follow posted instructions and crew guidance if your train has one. See Amtrak’s preparation guide and onboard information.

11. Use headphones for audio
Amtrak asks passengers to use headphones with phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices that emit sound. Keep the volume contained so it does not disturb other passengers. Its onboard information covers this courtesy.
12. Arrange pet travel in advance
Eligible dogs and cats can travel on many Amtrak trains, but pet travel requires advance planning and is subject to route and accommodation restrictions. Amtrak’s policy sets a maximum carrier size of 19 × 14 × 10.5 inches and a combined pet-and-carrier weight limit of 20 lb. Most trips are limited to seven hours. Check that your precise itinerary qualifies, reserve as required, and confirm the current fee and rules on Amtrak’s pet travel page.
13. Plan how you will get to and from the station
Depending on the station, departure options may include public transportation, rideshare, drop-off, or parking. At your destination, you may be able to walk, use transit, arrange a pickup, or take a taxi or rideshare. Check both stations for the services actually available; they are not the same everywhere. Amtrak’s preparation guide discusses station access.
14. Be ready to exit at your stop
At a major station, several doors may open. At a smaller stop, the conductor may direct passengers to a particular car or door. Pack up before arrival and follow crew instructions so you are ready to leave from the correct place. Amtrak explains this in its first-trip preparation guide.
