It lets lenders start with a credit report—with or without a selected score—and request additional scores later. TransUnion says lenders avoid paying for a second report only when eligibility and matching conditions are met. This is a lender-side product, not a new consumer subscription. The available official materials do not verify a matching Equifax tool, so the two companies’ offerings should not be treated as equivalent.
What TransUnion First Look does
First Look is designed to let mortgage lenders review report information before deciding whether they need additional score-based decisioning. TransUnion describes this as a “data-first” approach: a lender can order a report by itself or pair it with a score of its choice, then request additional scores if needed. TransUnion’s senior vice president and mortgage business leader, Satyan Merchant, described the workflow this way: “TransUnion First Look Functionality for Mortgage allows lenders to start with credit report insights and add additional score-based decisioning only when needed.”

The important cost qualification is that TransUnion says a second report charge is avoided only when eligibility and matching requirements are satisfied. The announcement does not say that every later score order qualifies or that every lender will save money. It also does not provide an independently measured estimate of savings for borrowers.

Where the workflow fits
TransUnion says First Look is compatible with government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) and Federal Housing Administration (FHA) automated underwriting workflows. The company also says it can be used with soft- and hard-pull workflows and through mortgage resellers. These are capabilities described by TransUnion, rather than independently verified performance results.
One example TransUnion gives is Early Access Soft Check, which uses a TransUnion report, VantageScore 4.0, and other report indicators to assess borrower eligibility before another score is needed. The company also lists optional trended data, alternative credit attributes, and income and employment verification as capabilities that can add information to the workflow.

What is—and is not—established about Equifax
The title names both Equifax and TransUnion, but the official materials available for this announcement substantiate TransUnion’s First Look product and its stated pricing context. They do not establish that Equifax launched a counterpart, or that Equifax offers the same workflow or terms. That distinction matters: lenders should confirm the services, eligibility rules, and fees in their own provider contracts rather than assume the companies’ products are interchangeable.
TransUnion’s announced mortgage score pricing
In an October 17, 2025 announcement, TransUnion said it would offer VantageScore 4.0 for mortgage at $4 in 2026. It also said that customers purchasing a FICO score from TransUnion would receive VantageScore 4.0 for mortgage at no additional charge through the end of 2026. TransUnion described multi-year pricing for credit reports and VantageScore 4.0 in the same release. These are TransUnion-announced terms, not established Equifax prices or a guarantee of what an individual lender pays under its contract.

The 2025 release also described a planned free VantageScore 4.0 credit score simulator for industry participants, including resellers, lenders, and brokers. TransUnion said it was intended to help prospective homebuyers understand possible score effects and mortgage qualification. The simulator is separate from First Look’s report-and-score ordering workflow.

First Look changes a lender’s ordering workflow; it does not change a consumer’s free access rights or establish that mortgage applicants will pay less. No borrower savings amount is stated in the available announcements. A lender’s actual report and score costs depend on its arrangement with the provider, and any potential operational savings should not be presented as a guaranteed reduction in a borrower’s mortgage costs.

Does checking my credit report hurt my credit score?
No. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says checking your own credit report does not affect your credit score. That consumer self-check is distinct from a lender’s credit inquiry for a mortgage application.
How often can I get a free credit report?
The CFPB says consumers can review reports online for free once a week from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies through AnnualCreditReport.com. The CFPB page, last reviewed May 14, 2024, also says consumers can request as many as six free Equifax reports in a 12-month period through December 2026.

TransUnion separately describes free daily access to its report and score through its free subscription, as well as weekly three-bureau reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. Its product page lists optional paid score access through a separate service-center route; that paid option is not the same as the free report entitlement.
What is the difference between a credit report and a credit score?
A credit report is the underlying record of credit-account and related information maintained by a reporting company. A credit score is a number calculated from information in a report using a scoring model. A lender may use report information, one or more scores, or both in its mortgage decision process.

Does the lender need to buy every credit score at the start of a mortgage application?
Not necessarily under TransUnion’s described First Look workflow: a participating lender can start with a report alone or a report and a selected score, then order additional scores later if needed. Whether that path is available and whether another report charge is avoided depends on the lender’s eligibility, matching conditions, and contract.
