The figures describe a one-month sales comparison and an aid allocation; they do not show whether assistance caused, prevented, or changed equipment purchases.
How much did tractor and combine sales drop in March?
Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) figures reported by Agriculture.com show year-over-year declines in both countries and both equipment categories for March 2026.
| Country | Equipment | March 2026 year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Tractors | 15,061 sold, down 9.1% from March 2025 |
| United States | Combines | Down 25.3% |
| Canada | Tractors | Down 16.3% |
| Canada | Combines | Down 60.6% |
The percentages compare March 2026 with March 2025. They do not mean sales fell by those amounts over the full year, and the U.S. tractor count is a monthly total, not a measure of year-to-date sales.
What did the $12 billion farm-aid announcement include?
USDA announced a $12 billion bridge-payment package in 2025. Within that total, up to $11 billion was allocated to the Farmer Bridge Assistance (FBA) program; the package was not an $11 billion program in its entirety. The Farm Service Agency announcement describes FBA as covering a portion of modeled losses during the 2025 crop year for eligible row-crop producers.

- 7720 Combine w/2 Heads
- 500 Grain Cart
That scope matters when comparing the aid with equipment sales. The allocation was not described as a grant to all farmers, nor as money earmarked for buying tractors or combines. Eligibility, modeled losses, and crop year determine what the program is intended to address.
Did farm aid boost equipment sales?
The cited figures do not establish an effect either way. They show that sales fell in March and that a bridge-payment package was announced, but they do not track individual recipients, equipment purchases funded by payments, dealer inventories, or a counterfactual showing what sales would have been without the aid. The headline is a timing comparison, not a measured impact estimate.

Farm finances provide context, but not a causal answer. USDA Economic Research Service’s September 3, 2026 forecast put 2026 nominal net farm income at $158.4 billion, $4.3 billion or 2.6% below 2025. Its inflation-adjusted net farm income forecast was down $9.1 billion, or 5.5%. These are forecasts, subject to revision, and net farm income is distinct from net cash farm income. Neither measure identifies why farmers did or did not buy equipment. See the ERS farm-sector income forecast.

No single direction describes every later month and category. Subsequent AEM reports show why month, country, and machine type need to stay attached to each percentage.
