Toyota’s October 2025 announcement of Century as a separate brand was a move to define its luxury portfolio, not an announcement that Century would replace Lexus or trigger a restructuring there. Toyota describes Century as serving the exclusive ultra-luxury space, while Lexus is meant to serve the broader luxury marketplace.
What Toyota announced about Century
At the Japan Mobility Show in October 2025, Toyota introduced Century as a distinct brand alongside Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu, and GR. That is a statement about brand architecture. The announcement did not identify Century as a replacement for Lexus or announce a Lexus shakeup.
How Toyota says Century and Lexus differ
At a Lexus press briefing on October 29, 2025, Toyota Motor Corporation Chief Branding Officer Simon Humphries described Century as occupying “the exclusive ultra-luxury space” and said that gives Lexus “the freedom to strengthen its promise to customers at the heart of the luxury marketplace.” Toyota’s briefing summary

This is Toyota’s stated positioning, not an independent measurement of how buyers classify the brands. The distinction is that Century is framed for an especially exclusive tier, while Lexus retains a broader luxury role.

Toyota says the Century name evokes the next century and that the brand is intended to express the spirit and pride of Japan to the world. Lexus: a promise to “Discover”
The same October 2025 briefing set out Lexus’s “Discover” direction. Lexus UK describes that direction as reaching beyond vehicles into products, services, experiences, and lifestyles. Lexus UK’s announcement In Humphries’s words, Lexus’s promise is “to DISCOVER.”

The official materials explain Toyota’s intended brand roles and meanings. They do not establish Century’s subsequent market availability, sales, customer response, or operational impact, nor do they show that Lexus sales or strategy changed as a result. Those outcomes require later evidence; the announcement alone supports a conclusion about positioning, not commercial effects.
