Is Toyota planning 15 EV models and one million vehicles a year by 2027? That figure comes from a Nikkei report cited by Reuters—not a target Toyota has confirmed. Reuters said Toyota declined to comment and that the information had not been announced by the company. The reported million refers to annual production, not sales. Reuters, April 6, 2025.
What the reported 2027 plan does—and does not—say
Nikkei, as relayed by Reuters, reported that Toyota aimed to develop about 15 in-house EV models by 2027 and produce about one million vehicles a year by then. Reuters said some of the models would carry the Lexus brand. Toyota did not confirm the figures; Reuters reported that the company declined to comment because the information had not been announced by Toyota. The numbers should therefore be treated as a reported ambition, not an official commitment or a guaranteed production outcome.
The distinction between production and sales matters. The reported one million is an annual production figure. It is not a forecast of one million sales in 2027, a cumulative production total, or a confirmed global target. The report also does not provide a definitive list of the 15 models, or a consistent global inventory of Toyota EVs that would make up that count. Reuters’ account of the Nikkei report.
How the 2027 report differs from Toyota’s public figures
Toyota’s official global battery-technology announcement set a 2026 BEV lineup standard of 1.5 million units. That figure is distinct from the reported one million vehicles of annual production by 2027: the years, measures, and source status differ. Separately, Reuters reported that Toyota had previously described its figures of 1.5 million annual EV sales for 2026 and 3.5 million for 2030 as benchmarks for shareholders rather than targets. What Toyota’s battery roadmap says
Toyota’s 2023 announcement described several battery development tracks, each with its own intended timing and performance goals. They are company aims, not independently verified vehicle results or guarantees that a particular battery will reach a mass-market model on schedule.

The 1,000 km figure is Toyota’s projection and includes expected gains from vehicle efficiency, such as improved aerodynamics and reduced weight. It is not an independently tested real-world range estimate. Toyota’s battery roadmap announcement.

What Toyota has announced by region
Europe: six more BEVs planned for reveal by the end of 2026
Toyota’s 2025 Europe announcement described an expansion across core SUV segments, naming the bZ4X, Urban Cruiser, and C-HR+. Toyota said it intended to reveal six new BEV models by the end of 2026. This is a European-market ambition, not a count that can be added directly to U.S. lineup figures or treated as confirmation of the reported global 15-model plan. United States: the 2027 bZ and its stated range estimates
In an August 4, 2026 announcement, Toyota called the 2027 bZ one of three BEV models in its U.S. electrified lineup at that time, alongside 15 hybrid and two plug-in hybrid models. Toyota said the 2027 bZ would be available in XLE and Limited grades, with front- or all-wheel drive. The company’s U.S. manufacturer-estimated range figures included 314 miles for the XLE FWD Plus with a 74.7-kWh battery and 236 miles for the XLE FWD with a 57.7-kWh battery. The same U.S. announcement says the 2027 bZ has a North American Charging System (NACS) port, supports Level 1 and Level 2 charging, and includes a dual-voltage charging cable and an adapter kit for SAE J1772 and CCS stations. For a prospective owner, that means a separate charger is not automatically necessary; check the connector and household electrical setup before buying charging equipment. Toyota USA.
China: a separate Lexus production venture
In February 2025, Toyota announced a new Shanghai venture to develop and produce Lexus BEVs. The Associated Press reported that production was planned to begin in 2027, with initial capacity of about 100,000 vehicles a year. That is a separate China investment announcement and reported facility capacity; it does not verify Toyota’s broader, unconfirmed one-million annual production figure. The Associated Press.

What this means for someone considering a Toyota EV
The reported production ambition does not tell buyers which models will reach their market, when they will arrive, or what they will cost. For a purchase decision, use specifications announced for the exact country, model year, and trim you are considering. Toyota’s U.S. 2027 bZ range estimates, for example, are not a substitute for European specifications or a promise about the eventual global lineup.
